Two-time Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad has taken the lead as the honorary chair for the upcoming Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Opening Night Gala. This exciting event will kick off a five-week holiday season in New York City. Set for December 4, the gala includes a special performance at the New York City Center and a celebratory party at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

A Night to Remember

The gala promises to be a night filled with talent and celebration. Alongside Phylicia Rashad, notable figures will join the honorary committee, including Academy Award winner Regina King and fashion designer Carolina Herrera. Together, they will honor Jody Gottfried Arnhold for her dedication to making dance accessible to everyone.

The evening will showcase a remarkable performance of Ronald K. Brown’s Grace, celebrating its 25th anniversary. This powerful dance combines modern movements with West African styles, portraying a journey toward hope and community. The performance will feature acclaimed artists Leslie Odom, Jr. and Cécile McLorin Salvant, who will enrich the event with their incredible talents.

Celebrating the Legacy of Alvin Ailey

The gala is a tribute to the enduring legacy of Alvin Ailey, who founded the American Dance Theater in 1958. The performance will culminate with Ailey’s iconic piece, Revelations, featuring a live choir that will bring the score of spirituals to life. This celebration of Black art and culture highlights the importance of Ailey’s contributions to the world of dance.

Proceeds from the gala will support the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation. This funding will help create new works, provide scholarships for talented students at The Ailey School, and support innovative educational programs for children. Such initiatives ensure that dance remains a vital art form accessible to all.

Join the Celebration

Tickets for the season performances at the City Center, running through January 5, 2025, are now available at ailey.org. This is an opportunity to witness the magic of dance while supporting the mission of the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation.

Celebrating the achievements of Black artists like Phylicia Rashad and Alvin Ailey helps keep their legacies alive. The gala not only honors their work but also inspires the next generation of dancers and performers.
