Atlantic Beach: Reviving a Historic Black Sanctuary
Dr. Tiffani Bailey Lash and Dr. Tashni-Ann Dubroy are leading a significant revival in Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, a historic Black-owned coastal town. Known as “The Black Pearl,” Atlantic Beach was once a haven for Black travelers during segregation. Today, thanks to the efforts of these two entrepreneurial women, it’s undergoing a transformation aimed at preserving Black land ownership while revitalizing the local community.

Their mission is not limited to real estate; it’s about preserving cultural heritage and securing a future for Black ownership. Lash and Dubroy, both HBCU graduates and founders of Tilair Capital, are working to restore this small town’s legacy while encouraging economic growth.

Serenity by Tilair: A Vision for Atlantic Beach’s Future
A key part of this revitalization is Serenity by Tilair, a luxury rental property established by Lash and Dubroy. This seven-bedroom property offers more than just a place to stay—it provides an experience that educates visitors about the rich history of Atlantic Beach. The luxury amenities, including personal chefs and concierge services, are matched by the attention to detail, making it a unique destination.

“We wanted people to feel the peace and serenity that we felt when we first visited Atlantic Beach,” Dubroy shared. Their goal is to attract visitors and investors who understand the importance of preserving the cultural history of the area while helping it grow.

Preserving the Legacy of Black Land Ownership
Atlantic Beach was established in 1934 as a sanctuary for Black Americans during segregation. Over the years, it became a popular resort town, attracting famous Black entertainers like Billie Holiday and James Brown. However, like many Black-owned communities, Atlantic Beach faced challenges after the Civil Rights Movement, with fewer visitors and economic decline.

Yet, Lash and Dubroy see opportunity in this rich history. Today, more than 90% of Atlantic Beach’s land remains Black-owned—a rare feat given the history of Black land loss in America. Their vision is to protect and preserve this legacy for future generations.

Fostering a New Era of Black Investment
Lash and Dubroy are working hard to encourage other Black investors to join their mission. They believe that economic investment is crucial to Atlantic Beach’s future. “We need more compassionate investors who understand the importance of Black ownership,” Dubroy says.

Their work is not just about making a profit; it’s about building a lasting legacy. By involving more people in preserving the town, they hope to create a future where the history and culture of Atlantic Beach are never forgotten.

A Call to Action for the Future
Lash and Dubroy’s work is a call to action for other investors and developers. The goal is not only to revitalize Atlantic Beach but also to protect it from gentrification and ensure that Black landowners continue to thrive. “We’re not here just to make money; we’re here to preserve a legacy,” says Lash.

With their entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the community, Lash and Dubroy are setting an inspiring example for others. Their efforts will ensure that Atlantic Beach, the last surviving Black-owned beach in the U.S., remains a vibrant part of Black history for years to come.
