Track and field star Sha’Carri Richardson received a warm welcome at her high school, Dallas Carter, on September 20. The school unveiled a track named after her during a football game against Wilmer-Hutchins. This special moment honors Richardson’s incredible journey from student-athlete to Olympic champion.
Honoring a Champion
The track at Kincaide Stadium now proudly displays Richardson’s name in bright white letters. A plaque nearby highlights her achievements in track and field. Located just a mile south of Dallas Carter High School, this track is part of the Jesse Owens Athletic Complex, emphasizing the legacy of great athletes.
Richardson expressed her pride in being an alumna of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). She shared, “I’m proud to come out of the DISD. I ran on this track. I can say I started my career on this track.” This recognition shows her commitment to her roots and the community that supported her.
A Journey of Hard Work
Richardson’s success story is inspiring. She won gold and silver medals at the recent Paris Olympic Games, showing her talent and determination. Before her Olympic success, she was a standout sprinter at Dallas Carter. Her hard work earned her the title of the top high school sprinter in the class of 2018.
After high school, Richardson attended Louisiana State University (LSU), where she continued to shine. She set multiple records in her freshman season, gaining the attention of USA Track and Field and marking her professional debut in 2019. Her journey reflects the idea that dedication can lead to great achievements.
Giving Back to the Community
Richardson’s recognition also emphasizes the importance of community. She said, “Where I come from continues to support me no matter how far I go.” This sentiment illustrates her desire to inspire others from similar backgrounds. She is determined to represent Dallas and its values as she continues her career.
The Dallas ISD school board initially named the track after Richardson in October 2023, recognizing her significant ties to the community. This tribute not only honors her achievements but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes.
