Monica Kaufman Pearson, a trailblazer in journalism, received the prestigious Gold Circle Award from the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). This honor was bestowed during the annual Gold and Silver Circle Awards Banquet in Atlanta on September 6. The Gold Circle celebrates those with over 50 years of experience in media, highlighting their significant contributions to the industry.

    Celebrating a Remarkable Career

Monica Pearson’s career spans an impressive 53 years. She made history in 1975 as the first Black woman news anchor at WSB-TV in Atlanta. Her impact on journalism and her community has been profound. After 37 years at WSB-TV, Pearson retired in July 2012, leaving behind a legacy of excellence.

Reflecting on her honor, Pearson expressed her gratitude. “I’m very excited about it. But when I think about it, I also have to look back at the people who helped me get here,” she shared in an interview. She credited Bill Summers, the first owner of a Black radio station in Kentucky, for giving her a chance in the industry.

    Recognizing Influential Media Professionals

The Gold Circle Awards not only celebrated Pearson but also recognized three other media veterans. Sheryl Gripper, founder of the Black Women Film Preservation Project, Gary Meadows of Meadows Media, and Charles Humbert, CEO of UP Entertainment, joined Pearson as inductees. This event honored their hard work and dedication to the media field.

During her long career, Pearson earned over 33 Southern Regional Emmy awards. Her contributions as a reporter and anchor have set a high standard for future journalists.

    Continuing the Journey

Though she is now “sorta retired,” Pearson remains active in media. She hosts The Monica Pearson Podcast, presented by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The podcast airs every Tuesday, sharing stories and insights with a wider audience on platforms like Apple and Spotify.

Her journey serves as an inspiration for many young journalists. Pearson’s ability to break barriers and achieve greatness showcases the importance of perseverance and support from others.

    A Legacy of Inspiration

Monica Pearson’s achievements go beyond awards and recognition. They represent a commitment to excellence in journalism and a dedication to uplifting her community. Her story encourages others to pursue their dreams and highlights the importance of mentors along the way.

With her recent honor, Pearson not only celebrates her own career but also paves the way for future generations in media. She embodies the spirit of resilience and determination that inspires so many.
