Erykah Badu’s Merasa Festival: A Journey to Self-Discovery
Erykah Badu is helping Black women reconnect with themselves through a practice called Merasa on the Indonesian island of Bali. Partnering with Desa Potato Head, a beachfront resort, Badu takes individuals on a transformative journey. The Merasa Festival uses music and creativity to elevate minds and bodies, fostering bonds and sharing knowledge.
“This retreat is essential,” Badu explains, emphasizing the freedom and shine it brings to women like her. She believes everyone has the right to “be beautiful, to have strong willpower, to keep your balance, to be kind to yourself.”
The Power of Wellness and Self-Care
Badu stresses the importance of starting a wellness journey by making small, positive changes. “You start your wellness journey when you decide to be well – and you start it one little thing at a time,” she tells ESSENCE. This approach encourages participants to take control of their well-being, setting boundaries and allowing only positive thoughts.
Bali has become a popular destination for Black women seeking self-care practices. The island’s simple, mindful way of living encourages visitors to pause and focus on their breathing. “People pay more attention to ceremony, community, and rituals here in Bali, which is a huge difference from The West,” says Merasa Festival attendee Robyn Hillman-Harrigan.
Bali: A Hub for Wellness and Healing
The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted Bali’s tourism, with a 99.9% decline in arrivals. However, the desire for wellness practices has grown, drawing people to holistic journeys aimed at improving health and well-being. Activities like spa visits, Pilates, yoga, and mineral baths are popular among wellness seekers.
Actress Taraji P. Henson found solace in a solo trip to Bali in April 2023. “I wasn’t happy anymore. I lost a sense of joy,” she shared on the “Sherri” show. Her journey was about overcoming fear and staying present, which helped her reconnect with herself and others.
Embracing Wellness and Community
Erykah Badu’s retreat is not just about wellness; it’s evidence of what can be achieved through consistent self-care. The Merasa Festival highlights the importance of community and rituals in achieving a balanced and fulfilled life.
Participants return home ready to conquer the world, inspired by Bali’s tranquil and supportive environment.
