Recognizing and Addressing Signs of Burnout

In challenging times like layoffs, it’s crucial for leaders to be attuned to their team’s well-being.

Award-winning career and leadership development professional Joyel Crawford emphasizes the importance of recognizing the signs of burnout, which can include decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, withdrawal from interactions, and a lack of interest in previously engaging tasks.

“I applaud you for seeing the signs of burnout in your staff. Signs of burnout can be tricky to identify.”

Creating a Safe Space for Open Communication

Crawford advises managers to foster an environment where employees feel safe to voice their concerns and advocate for their needs.

Active listening and follow-through on committed actions are key to building trust and giving employees a true voice in creating a healthier work-life balance.

“Make it a safe space for your employees to voice their concerns and challenges. Encourage them to show their ASK and advocate for themselves.”

Leading by Example: Practicing Work-Life Balance

As a leader, it’s essential to model the work-life balance you want to see in your team. Crawford emphasizes the importance of truly disconnecting from work during vacations and time off, setting boundaries, and not contributing to the normalization of overworking.

“Walk the talk. Show the staff what it looks like to let go and not take life and work so seriously. Check yourself before you wreck yourself.”

Fostering Flexibility and Equal Workload Distribution

Exploring flexible work schedules and ensuring equitable workload distribution can help maintain productivity while promoting employee well-being. Crawford encourages leaders to get creative and find solutions that work best for their team.

“Get creative. Remind your staff of their time off. If you’re able, help them create a flexible work schedule that keeps productivity and morale high.”

Despite the challenges, Crawford emphasizes the importance of perseverance and consistently demonstrating genuine care for the team’s well-being. By leading with empathy and taking tangible steps to support their mental health, leaders can navigate difficult times while fostering a positive and productive work environment.

“Don’t give up. Keep trying to break through by showing and telling them you care about their well-being.”
