Renowned Activist and Daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. Inspires Attendees
Bernice King, the youngest daughter of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., delivered a powerful and thought-provoking address at the 2024 Black Girls Dream Conference.
The event, hosted by the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium, brought together over 1,300 girls and women in Atlanta for a weekend of inspiration and empowerment.
“I Went Through Seasons of Anger Because of All the Loss in My Life”
“I went through some seasons of having a lot of anger because of all the loss I had in my life,” Bernice candidly revealed during the live session posted on the consortium’s YouTube channel.
The lawyer and peace advocate opened up about her upbringing as a shy and inquisitive young girl, surrounded by tragedy yet exposed to resilient women who shaped her journey. Despite the challenges she faced, Bernice was instilled with faith, strength, and an understanding of her power.
Crediting Her Mother’s Pivotal Role and the Village of Black Women
“She was a powerful woman in her own right before she met him,” Bernice said, emphasizing the pivotal role played by the village of Black women around her in navigating the world.
Bernice spoke highly of her mother, Coretta Scott King, crediting her father’s notability to Coretta’s unwavering support. She acknowledged the crucial role played by the village of Black women around her in shaping her journey and understanding of the world.
Mastering Emotions and Finding Purpose: Invaluable Lessons
The peace advocate challenged attendees to master and discipline their emotions, sharing an invaluable lesson from her mother – to never make a decision while angry.
She emphasized the importance of including God as a partner in life’s decisions, stating, “When you’re making decisions in life, don’t leave out God…You need Him as a partner.”
Identifying and Embracing One’s Purpose
“I’m obviously a student of my father’s nonviolence,” Bernice stated, clarifying that nonviolence is a “spiritual thing and a mindset, transcending the physical realm.”
Moreover, she urged attendees to find their purpose, encouraging them to identify a problem they can answer and provide a solution for. Bernice challenged the women in the room to stand firm in their purpose as women and embrace their role as agents of change.
