In a remarkable achievement that defies conventional norms, 17-year-old Dorothy Jean Tillman II from Chicago has etched her name in history as the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from Arizona State University.
Tillman’s extraordinary journey began at a tender age when she was homeschooled by her family. Her insatiable thirst for knowledge propelled her to enroll in college at the astonishingly young age of 10. By 2018, she had already earned a bachelor’s degree in humanities from New York’s Excelsior College.
“People in my life like my grandmother… harped on the importance of education and consistently learning something always,” Tillman said, crediting her family’s influence as a driving force behind her passion for education.
Shattering Age Barriers: A Doctoral Degree at 17
Undeterred by societal norms, Tillman continued her relentless pursuit of knowledge, obtaining a Master’s degree in Science by 2020. At the tender age of 15, she was accepted into the Doctorate of Behavioral Health Management program at Arizona State University, setting the stage for her historic achievement.
Tillman’s unwavering determination was fueled by the steadfast support of her family, particularly her mother, whom she credited as one of her biggest motivators. “Seeing my mother consistently work so hard to continuously uphold our family’s legacy… always seeing [her] like [a] ‘wonder woman’ definitely made me want to grow up [into] an accomplished person,” Tillman expressed.
A Passion for Education and Advocacy
Beyond her remarkable academic achievements, Tillman is a passionate advocate for education. As the founder and CEO of a leadership institute that integrates the arts with STEM education, she aims to inspire and empower students to embrace knowledge in all its forms.
“I feel like adding art and putting a focus on it throughout science, technology, engineering and math makes the kids excited to learn all those things,” she explained, underscoring her commitment to making education accessible and engaging.
Inspiring Future Generations
Tillman’s groundbreaking accomplishment has garnered widespread admiration and recognition, with Associate Professor Leslie Manson hailing her achievement as “a wonderful celebration” and expressing hope that Tillman’s success will inspire more students to pursue their dreams relentlessly.
