The commanding voice behind this iconic character belongs to Alison Sealy-Smith, a talented actress born in Barbados and based in Canada. Alison’s portrayal has become the gold standard for Marvel’s weather-controlling heroine.
“I was made for these beautiful one-liners,” Alison said, recalling her experience. “This is what this instrument was for.”
From Stage to Studio: A Theatrical Journey
Alison’s path to voicing Storm began in the early 1990s when she stumbled upon the X-Men auditions. Despite initial doubts about voice acting, her background in theatre proved to be a perfect match for the role. “I saw the word ‘queen,’ and I thought, ‘Okay, I can do that,'” she remembered.
Drawing from her Caribbean roots and understanding of the character’s complexities, Alison breathed life into Storm, capturing her regal essence, emotional depth, and unwavering determination.

“I have known pain, grief, horror, terror, joy, and excitement,” she explained. “An actor must not be afraid of big emotions, to go into those dark places and express them in a way that resonates with others.”

Nearly three decades after her iconic portrayal in X-Men: The Animated Series, Alison has reprised her role as Storm in the highly anticipated sequel series, X-Men ’97.
With a renewed sense of responsibility and deeper understanding of the character, Alison continues to captivate audiences, breathing new life into the beloved mutant.
“I’m more aware of the audience when I’m in that studio alone,” she shared. “I’m a bit more terrified, yet more sure and relaxed, fully understanding who this woman is and appreciating the opportunity to do this again.”
