Being a new mom is both an amazing and challenging experience. In the midst of caring for a newborn, it can be easy to neglect your own needs when it comes to self-care and beauty routines. But as these new moms will tell you, taking the time to prioritize yourself is crucial.
In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, Essence spoke to three moms who shared their honest experiences and advice on navigating the postpartum period.
From finding balance in your wellness routine to discovering a new beauty regimen that works for your changing body, these moms offer relatable and practical tips that all new mothers can benefit from.
Be Gentle and Kind to Yourself
Dermatologist Dr. Elyse Love shares how her relationship with beauty and wellness has evolved since becoming a mom. “Before having a child, my wellness routine was very high-maintenance and indulgent. Now, I try my best to work out 2-3 days a week, but the rest are rare indulgences that I almost never have time for.”
Dr. Love emphasizes the importance of giving yourself grace during this transition. “It will take time to find your new balance, and as soon as you do, everything will probably change. Embrace it and make it as fun as possible.” She advises new moms to prioritize rest and nutrition above all else.
Integrate Self-Care Into Your Routine
Beauty editor Aimee Simeon says becoming a mom has deepened her appreciation for self-care. “Moments to rest and regenerate are definitely something I took for granted pre-baby, and now I am constantly looking for ways to integrate beauty and wellness into my routine to care for myself.”
Simeon makes time for simple acts of self-care, like a relaxing wash day or an at-home manicure. “Checking in with myself and honoring my needs in those moments has helped keep me balanced,” she explains. Her advice to other new moms is to “give yourself grace and try to make time to focus on one feel-good thing at a time to pour into yourself.”
Adjust Your Beauty Routine to Your New Life
Lifestyle editor Victoria Uwumarogie admits that after having her second child, she initially didn’t care much about her appearance. “I was just trying to make sure I was mentally sound and that I was meeting the needs of my two very small children.”
However, as her kids have gotten older, Uwumarogie has found joy in revamping her beauty routine. “I like to put on makeup when I go out for church or for special occasions with my husband. I recently colored my hair for spring to just bring some vibrancy into my day to day.”
Her advice to other new moms is to “give it time” and not be too hard on yourself. “In the beginning, it’s going to be hard to find the time (but certainly you’ll have the desire) to pamper yourself. But you’ll find that as they sleep longer, eat on their own and find independence, there will be more room for you to pour into the practices that make you happy.”
The postpartum journey is different for every mom, but the common thread is the need to be patient, flexible, and intentional about self-care.
