GloRilla Speaks Out on the Pressures Faced by Female Rappers in the Industry

GloRilla, the rising star in the rap scene, has been making waves not only with her music but also with her unapologetic stance on the challenges faced by Black women in the industry.

In a recent interview on the Tamron Hall Show, the 24-year-old Memphis rapper shed light on the inherent double standards and pressures that female artists often face, shedding a much-needed spotlight on this critical issue.

The Pressure to Perform: A Gendered Burden

During the interview, GloRilla candidly shared her experiences, stating, “The pressure is different because a man, a male rapper, can just go out there, walk across the stage, and just say they lyrics. They can just wear anything: extremely big clothes. Nobody is going to say nothing. It might be cute to them. We have to have our hair on point, like we can’t have a toenail or nail off. They gonna have something to say.”

The Financial Strain of Maintaining a Performing Image

The artist also highlighted the financial burdens that female performers often shoulder, noting that the costs of glam, choreography, and various stage elements are significantly higher for women than for their male counterparts.

“It costs more, most definitely, for a female performer. Because we’re going to actually give a show, I feel like. So it’s more pressure on us because they expect more out of us than they do with males,” GloRilla explained.

Refusing to Crumble Under Pressure

Despite the immense pressure, GloRilla remains undaunted, determined to rise above the challenges and continue to showcase her talent. When Tamron Hall asked if she “cracked under pressure,” the rapper’s response was a resounding, “No, I’m going to give them what they want.”

GloRilla’s openness and honesty in addressing these issues have not gone unnoticed. As a rising star in the industry, her willingness to speak up and shed light on the unique obstacles faced by Black women in music has earned her widespread admiration and respect.
