Black women have long carried a heavier burden when it comes to uterine fibroids. While many are told their only option is a hysterectomy, one doctor is working to change that conversation.

Board-certified OB-GYN Dr. Pierre Johnson has earned the nickname “The Fibroid Slayer” for treating some of the country’s most difficult fibroid cases. His mission goes beyond surgery. He wants Black women to understand their options, protect their fertility, and make informed decisions about their health.

Dr. Pierre Johnson is changing fibroid treatment for Black women

Uterine fibroids affect up to 80% of Black women by age 50, making them one of the most common health conditions in the community. Yet many women are still told to live with severe pain or remove their uterus without fully discussing other treatment options.

Dr. Johnson believes that approach needs to change. As a specialist in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and pelvic floor repair, he has built a national reputation for handling advanced fibroid cases that many doctors consider too difficult. His philosophy is simple: every woman deserves compassionate care that respects her future goals.

“At the end of the day, it’s a benign tumor. It’s 99.9% benign. These are not cancerous things that you’re dealing with,” Dr. Johnson said. “It really comes down to the compassion and the willingness to give someone the opportunity for pregnancy in the future.”

The ‘Fibroid Slayer’ challenges medical bias and expands women’s choices

Dr. Johnson says many Black women face more than just fibroids. They also encounter bias, poor communication, and a lack of empathy during medical visits. He believes those problems can lead women to make life-changing decisions without fully understanding every available option.

He explained that many professional Black women delay starting families while pursuing education and careers. Later, when they seek medical care, they are sometimes told they are too old to have children instead of receiving support that reflects their personal goals.

“There’s so many doctors that are very dismissive of women. ‘If you have fibroids, just remove your uterus.’ Not asking them what their goals are,” he said.

Dr. Johnson also believes many recommendations reflect the limits of a doctor’s training rather than the patient’s possibilities. Because of that, he encourages women to seek second opinions when they feel their concerns are not being heard.

How Dr. Pierre Johnson saved a pregnant woman’s uterus

Dr. Johnson recently gained national attention after removing a 27-pound fibroid from a pregnant woman. Other physicians had reportedly advised her to terminate her pregnancy and undergo a hysterectomy. He believed another path was possible.

After examining the patient, he determined the massive fibroid could be removed without a vertical incision. During surgery, he located the fibroid’s stalk and successfully removed the growth.

“I can do this. It’s gonna be risky, but I know I could do it,” he recalled telling the patient. “We don’t have to do a vertical incision.”

The successful operation reinforced his belief that no fibroid should automatically end a woman’s hopes of preserving her uterus or having children. He says each patient deserves an individualized treatment plan instead of a one-size-fits-all solution.

Dr. Pierre Johnson urges Black women to listen to their bodies

While Dr. Johnson performs complex surgeries, he says prevention and awareness remain equally important. Rather than worrying about simply having fibroids, he encourages women to pay attention to changes in their bodies.

Heavy or worsening periods, painful intercourse, new menstrual pain, unexplained infertility, or feeling a hard mass in the abdomen are all signs that deserve medical attention. However, he does not recommend routine scans for women who have no symptoms. Instead, he encourages regular physical exams with healthcare providers who listen carefully to their patients.

Through advanced surgical care, patient education, and advocacy, Dr. Johnson is helping Black women reclaim confidence in their reproductive health. His work is also challenging long-standing assumptions about fibroid treatment and proving that preserving both health and hope should always remain part of the conversation.
