A Rising Star in the Knitwear World

Ranti Ehinmola, a 27-year-old self-taught knitwear designer from London, is making waves in the industry with her distinctive textiles and boundary-pushing approach. Her eponymous brand, Ranti Studios, launched last year with a mission to create pieces that foster a sense of community among knitters.

“I have always made things for myself, but I found after posting my pieces on social media that people resonated with what I was creating and wanted to make similar projects for themselves,” Ehinmola shared with ESSENCE.com.

Humble Beginnings and a Passion for Knitting

Ehinmola’s journey into the world of knitting began during the pandemic in 2020, when she took up the craft as a way to pass the time. With an insatiable appetite for learning, she immersed herself in YouTube tutorials and honed her skills through trial and error.

“I aim to combine texture and form to create unique wearable art pieces,” she notes.

A Community-Driven Approach

What sets Ranti Studios apart is its community-centric approach. Ehinmola offers knitting patterns for purchase, custom orders, and ready-to-wear pieces, all designed to encourage experimentation and creativity.

“I love seeing all the variations that come from people putting their spin on my patterns,” Ehinmola shared.

Pushing Boundaries with Unique Textures

Inspired by her architecture degrees from the Royal College of Art, Ehinmola’s designs are characterized by their innovative textures and forms.

Her popular Romanesco jumper, featuring bulbous textures throughout the knit, and the eponymous Ranti jumper, with its subtly striped texture, showcase her ability to push the limits of hand-knitting.

A Vision for Inclusivity and Collaboration

While the knitwear community has been welcoming and supportive, Ehinmola hopes to introduce more Black creatives like herself into the space. Additionally, she has plans to collaborate with other designers and expand her brand with even more ambitious projects.

“The possibilities are endless,” she adds.
