The miraculous return of Carlee Russell left many social media users relieved that the 25-year-old returned home alive after a 49-hour search and prayer warriors. Although Russell’s case has left us with many questions, authorities have decided to inform the public of the details surrounding her alleged kidnapping and disappearance.
Police in Alabama provided information, including internet searches from Carlee Russell’s phone, days before she disappeared for around 48 hours.
Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said in a news conference Wednesday that searches from her phone included information about Amber Alerts, bus schedules and the movie “Taken.” He said an analysis of internet searches was done with the help of the U.S. Secret Service.
“There are many questions left to be answered that only Carlee can provide those answers, but what we can say is we’ve been unable to verify most of Carlee’s initial statement made to investigators,” Durzis said. “And we have no reason to believe that there is a threat to public safety related to this particular case.”
On Thursday, when Carlee went missing, she told 911 and a family member in a separate call that she had stopped on Interstate 459 when she saw a small child alone on the side of the highway. Police claim to have not found any evidence or other reports of a missing child on the interstate that night. Detectives have asked for a second interview with Russell, but it has not been granted, Durzis said.
Surveillance video from Russell’s neighborhood shows her walking alone down a sidewalk before getting to her home on Saturday. Radio traffic indicated medics were then dispatched to her home, where she was responsive and talking, and took her to the hospital.
Queens, please do not let this particular case distract you from the fact that thousands of Black girls and women are currently missing, and little is being done about it.
This incident does not reflect the black community or Black women as a whole and will not deter us from wanting to bring our girls home. We hope Carlee and the Russell family get the healing they need to move on from this. #BWLM💕
