Coco Jones was emotional as she accepted the honors for Best New Artist at the BET Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles Sunday.
“I am so happy – oh, thank you, Jesus,” the 25-year-old said, wiping away tears as she accepted the honor.
The win is personal to Jones as she previously revealed her struggle as a child star at Disney more than ten years ago.
Jones uploaded a video to YouTube titled “What Really Happened,” which detailed her experiences facing creative pushback and alleged colorism during her time in the child star machine. Her fans responded with shock and support, and soon enough, doors began to open.
“It has been a long journey,” she said. “Thank you to my culture, who has stood beside me, raised together, been a really long journey.”
