Baby, California has been in the news a lot this year but it’s not all bad.
98 years ago, state officials stole the prime oceanfront land from a Black family that cultivated an area to host a thriving community. Last Tuesday, a #LosAngelesCounty commission voted to return the property to the Bruce’s, the original owners’ family.
In 1912 Willa and Charles Bruce, purchased the land for $1,225 and built it into a seaside resort for Black families. The descendants will retake ownership of Bruce’s Beach in the city of #ManhattanBeach. The land had been seized from them in 1924 under the guise of #eminentdomain
The agreement returns the land to Marcus and Derrick Bruce, Anthony Bruce’s parents and the great-grandsons of Willa and Charles. The family reportedly intends to lease the land back to L.A. County at $413,000 a year so the county lifeguard facilities at the site can continue operation.
Other terms in the agreement also state that the family can sell the property back to the county for no more than $20 million, “which likely will take place,” said Anthony Bruce.
We are awaiting to see if other states get on board with giving back what was wrongfully taken, to the rightful owners. Surely the rest of America catch on. #BWLMđź’•
