While inside of a Macy’s a few months ago, Cenetta Baker-Woods discovered that Macy’s had a section of dresses in color combos that were inspired by the sororities of the #Divine9: Zeta Phi Beta, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Alpha Kappa Alpha. She showed fellow members of her Zeta Phi Beta chapter right on the spot.
Given the dozens of yearly get-togethers for any fraternity or sorority, it can be difficult for these ladies to find fashionable and appropriate dresses to wear. “We know when we see our stuff,” said Baker-Woods. “I know now where to look.”
The idea for the line originated from WyQuasia King-Thomas, a director and buyer of day dresses at Macy’s. The 32-year-old is also a Zeta and had her own struggles finding outfits for sorority outings.
“We come in a variety of shape, sizes, curves and I understand the challenges we face when shopping,” King-Thomas told Bloomberg. “I know the need and the importance of this dress collection.”
Macy’s expects this business venture to hit $10 million in sales this year, Chief Executive Officer Jeff Gennette said in a recent interview.
Via @Bloomberg:
“The collection is available online and in more than 200 of the company’s roughly 500 Macy’s locations. The sororities (Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Sigma Gamma Rho) will have at least five pieces per launch and women’s suits will debut next month. The retailer is also donating $1 million to the education and research foundations of the sororities.”
We love this! #BWLM💕
