The very gifted Alena Wicker ( @TheBrownStemGirl ) is getting ready to graduate high school and already has her eyes set on working at #NASA!
Wicker will be virtually attending #ArizonaStateUniversity after she graduates high school this May. According to @GoodMorningAmerica, she will double major in astronomical and planetary science and chemistry which will bring her closer to her dream of working at NASA as an engineer.
At first, Wicker wanted to be an astronomer, but her love of building things is what made her settle on becoming an engineer. “I would love to build a rover to go to space,” Alena said.
Alena’s mother Daphne McQuarter recounts her daughter affirming that she would be the youngest Black girl to work at NASA. “She would always say ‘Mommy, I’m going to work for NASA,'” McQuarter tells #GMA. “Then she would start saying, ‘I’m going to be the youngest Black girl to ever work for NASA — watch.'”
Good Morning America reports, “Alena noticed the racial and gender disparities in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields and decided to do something about it. She launched her own website, the Brown Stem Girl ( @TheBrownStemGirl ), to provide an outlet for girls of color in #STEM.
“She said, ‘Mom, I want to create this culture of Brown girls in STEM, because it’s this whole gap, and I just want to do something,'” McQuarter said of her daughter’s motivation.
This little girl is well on her way to making her dreams come true, this is so amazing! #BWLMđź’•
