Cheyenne Scott had never painted a mural when she took one on. She said she knew she could anyway, and that is the turn in a career that had already taken her further than most artists get.
Scott is a visual artist, muralist and set painter in Los Angeles, and before the walls she worked as an art department coordinator. Her production credits run through the Oscars, the Grammys, the Emmys, the Golden Globes and the NAACP Image Awards, and she worked on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. Set work comes down after the broadcast. A mural does not.
Among the walls she has painted is her niece’s bedroom, done when her niece was three. “I had never done it before, but I knew I could,” Scott said. “I felt so much joy putting something permanent on the wall. It just felt so good to my soul.” She said she had finally found something she was supposed to be doing.
She has since painted a mural for Destination Crenshaw and a mural at All Floors 4 Less. She is originally from Aguadulce, California, and lives in Woodland Hills, in the San Fernando Valley, where she paints on purpose. “I like painting in the Valley because there isn’t much public art out here,” she said. “I think color and vibrancy evoke joy.”
Her advice to other artists was two words. “Don’t stop.”
