A limited series is a job with an end date on it, and by October 5, 2026, Kerry Washington’s had stopped having one.

Apple TV is taking Imperfect Women into a second season, and not as a second limited run. The show was renewed as an ongoing series, which changes what it is. Washington stars in it and produces it through her Simpson Street company, with Love and Squalor Pictures as a production partner, so one renewal keeps her in the lead role and keeps her company’s slate moving at the same time. That is two jobs held with one order.

Season one premiered March 18, 2026, adapted from Araminta Hall’s novel, with Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara alongside Washington. Apple’s own framing on the renewal is that the global hit limited series is back by popular demand. Annie Weisman and Justin Hillian are the co-showrunners on the new season.

Season two is where the shift shows. It carries a wholly original arc rather than more of the novel, centred on Eleanor, the character Washington plays, and it moves to Martha’s Vineyard, Eleanor’s hometown. A show built on somebody else’s book is now a show being written around her character.

There is no premiere date and no production start on the record yet, so this is not a tune-in story. It is a business one. The distance between a limited series and an ongoing one is the distance between a season of work and a franchise, and for a Black woman who owns a piece of the thing she stars in, the second one is what the first was for.

Worth noting what the renewal does not say. There is no word on which of the season one cast returns, and no production start. What is on the record is the structural part: an ongoing order, an original arc, a new setting, and the same woman at the centre of it with her name on the production company.
