Luxury bridal has rarely had a Black woman designing in it, and the bride it pictures has looked much the same for decades. Ugochi Iwuaba, a Nigerian born designer based in San Diego, put 17 gowns on a New York runway on October 15, 2026, and sent one of them out on a model wearing her natural hair.
The collection is called The Cathedral Collection. It is her first bridal line and it showed at New York Bridal Fashion Week. She has made custom pieces for clients including the television host Nina Parker. Her own account of the work is a negotiation between two instincts. “I take a little bit of our extravagance, and I refine it and restrain it,” she said of how her West African culture shows up in the designs.
She chose the gown for that runway moment to suit the model’s caramel skin, and she was plain about why the look was on the runway at all. “We do get married, too,” she said. “Yes, we do.”
Her advice to brides carries no restraint in it whatsoever. “There’s no such thing as too much when it comes to a wedding gown,” she said.
She says there is room for more Black designers in luxury bridal, and she is not treating a first collection as a visit. “I’m here to stay,” she said.
