An artist going home usually means a show and a wave. What Missy Elliott is putting in Norfolk on October 18, 2026 is a stadium of HBCU bands and a summit students can actually use.
The HBCU Band Battle runs that Sunday at 4 p.m. at William Dick Price Stadium at Norfolk State University, 700 Park Avenue. Four marching bands are on the card: Norfolk State’s Spartan Legion, Virginia State’s Trojan Explosion, Elizabeth City State’s Sound of Class and Hampton University’s Marching Force.
“Virginia will always be home, so bringing something like this back means a lot to me,” Elliott said. “HBCU bands have always brought so much energy, creativity, and culture to music.”
The second half is the part that will still matter in a year. The Missy Elliott Innovation Summit carries programming for college students and high school seniors on technology, music, education, entrepreneurship and creative careers. Not a masterclass and not a meet and greet. A program aimed at students who are already at these schools, built around the industries that decide whether they get in.
Put the two together and you have the shape of the whole weekend. Portsmouth has named a street Missy Elliott Boulevard in her honour, after the city council voted to rename a mile of McLean Street. A boulevard is what a place does for you. A stadium of bands and a student summit is what you do back.
One thing to hold before anybody plans around it. The band battle has a date, a time and a venue on the record. The summit’s exact dates and venue do not.
Four bands is also a specific number. It means four student bodies with a reason to travel, four band directors with a budget line and four sets of parents in the stands. An appearance brings a crowd for one artist. A battle brings four schools, and makes the schools the point.
