Two autopsies could not say how Nolan Wells died. A Mississippi grand jury declined to indict anyone over it. On Monday October 5, 2026 his mother stood in front of cameras and said she is not able to live with that.

Wells was 18. He was Black and Filipino. He died during a July 4 boating trip to Horn Island, and in the months since, both autopsies performed on him returned the same finding: cause and manner of death undetermined. The grand jury found no credible evidence that the people on the trip committed a crime.

That is the ruling Christine Wonsley is refusing.

“We were left with many, many inconsistent stories,” she said, and with “more questions and heartbreak than any answers.”

“I cannot take that ruling, and I cannot move on with my life,” she said.

She did not ask on her own behalf, and she did not ask quietly. She put the whole room in the sentence.

“Elmore and I, our family, our friends, the community, all of you, we cannot accept that. We cannot. cannot. So it is our plea that this case is reopened, reexamined,” she said.

Elmore Wonsley, Nolan’s father, stood with her. So did the civil rights attorney Ben Crump, and Cynthia Choi, executive director of Stop AAPI Hate, who came because Nolan was Filipino as well as Black and because his family is asking two communities to carry this at once.

What the family wants is specific. They are asking the FBI and the Department of Justice to reopen the investigation. Crump also called for the National Park Service to examine what happened on Horn Island, which is federal ground, and which is the detail that makes a federal request something other than a symbolic one.

An undetermined finding is not the same as nothing happened. It means the people whose job it was to say could not say. A grand jury declining to indict is not an acquittal either. It means a panel was not persuaded there was enough to charge anyone.

Those two sentences are the entire distance between what the record now says and what a mother is asking for. She is not asking anybody to conclude anything. She is asking somebody to look again.
