On October 3, 2026, Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon laid out the insults aimed at her since she became the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate, and then answered them in her own name.

“Folks have insulted: My Southern drawl. My loc’d hair. My clothes. My shoes. My intelligence,” she wrote. She said she had also been called a racist and sexist slur, which is not reprinted here, and had been told she should leave the country.

“The fact that they are trying to demonize me and tell me I need to leave the country, the very country that I was born and raised in, the very state,” she said.

Then she set the terms herself. “I don’t identify as anything,” she said. “I identify as Angie, a hard-working person who is going to put people first.”

Nixon represents Jacksonville in the Florida House. She won the Democratic nomination in August and faces incumbent Republican Ashley Moody on November 3. If she wins she would be Florida’s first Black United States senator.

She has spent the campaign on the same ground she is being attacked over. She was arrested in May during a sit in at the governor’s office over newly drawn congressional maps she says dilute Black voting power, and resolved that case in September without pleading guilty. Four weeks out, she is still answering for her accent, her hair and her name, and still running.
