Danessa Myricks worked backstage at Sergio Hudson’s Spring/Summer 2027 show during New York Fashion Week, and an unreleased palette from her own line was in the kit.

Sir John was lead makeup artist. Camille Rose handled hair. Myricks launched her namesake brand in 2015 and sells it at Sephora, and the women who use it include Jackie Aina, Keke Palmer, Michelle Obama and Angela Bassett.

The part of the conversation that matters is about her hair.

“You name the style, I had it,” she said. Then she locked it.

“In my professional life I think I got to a point where I wanted to make a statement about who I am,” Myricks said. She has caught professional pushback for the locs since.

“Instead of shrinking into that, I wanted to dial that up,” she said. “I wanted to say that this is me.”

And the line she left on the table:

“I can be an amazing entrepreneur, I can still be an executive. And I am an amazing business person, too. I feel the most powerful in my natural hair.”

Black women have been told for decades that those two sentences cannot sit next to each other. Myricks put her locs and her palette in the same room at fashion week and let the work argue for her.
