Vanessa Miller is bringing Black women’s everyday struggles to the center of her next novel.

The bestselling author has unveiled the cover of The Disgruntled Black Ladies Book Club. The book explores friendship, family, careers, relationships, and sisterhood.

Miller revealed the cover exclusively through EBONY on September 24, 2026. The novel is scheduled for release on May 25, 2027.

The story follows three Black women whose lives have not gone as planned. Their book club eventually becomes a space for honesty, laughter, support, and deeper friendship.

Vanessa Miller Turns Real-Life Frustrations Into a New Black Women’s Novel

Miller said frustration helped inspire her new story. She was speaking with her agent about another historical fiction project.

However, she told her agent that she felt too frustrated by current events. Her agent, Emily Slyvan Kim, then suggested that she write about those feelings.

That conversation helped create The Disgruntled Black Ladies Book Club. Miller decided to move from historical stories toward the present experiences of Black women.

The novel focuses on personal struggles rather than historical figures. It explores issues many women face behind closed doors.

The Disgruntled Black Ladies Book Club Follows Three Black Women

The novel centers on Alexis Osborn, Ericka Williams, and Kenyatta Rivers. Each woman has a different career and a different set of challenges.

Alexis is a motivational speaker. Ericka works as an attorney, while Kenyatta is a struggling entrepreneur.

Despite their differences, their lives share a common thread. None of them feels that life has turned out as expected.

Miller said the women face disappointments, relationships, family expectations, and career struggles. They also carry the pressure of being dependable for everyone around them.

The Book Club Becomes a Space for Black Women’s Sisterhood

The three women initially connect through a book club. However, their meetings soon become much more than discussions about books.

Their conversations become increasingly open and personal. They laugh together, disagree, share opinions, and discuss their struggles.

Eventually, the women discover that their friendship has become something deeper. The book club gives them a place where they can feel understood.

Miller describes their bond as sisterhood. The women are not perfect, either. They can be stubborn, messy, funny, loving, and direct with each other.

Still, their friendship has a strong foundation. When one woman needs help, the others show up.

Vanessa Miller Uses the Cover to Include the Reader

The book cover contains four Black women. However, only three women are the novel’s main characters.

Miller said the fourth woman represents the reader. She designed the cover with the idea that readers should feel part of the conversation.

That detail also reflects the book’s larger purpose. Miller wants Black women to recognize themselves in the experiences explored throughout the story.

She described the novel as a love letter to Black women. She also expressed hope that readers understand their value and importance.

The cover therefore introduces more than the characters. It invites readers into their world before they even open the book.

Miller’s New Novel Follows Her Recent Bestseller

The upcoming book comes after another major achievement for Miller. Her recent historical novel, The Ladies Hall: A Novel of Three Women Who Refused to Be Silenced, reached the USA TODAY bestseller list in August.

That book focused on Black women whose stories have often received limited attention. Her new novel takes a different approach.

This time, Miller is looking at contemporary Black women and their everyday lives. The change allows her to explore modern relationships, work, family, disappointment, and friendship.

Together, the books show different sides of Miller’s writing. One looks toward overlooked history, while the other focuses on present-day experiences.

Vanessa Miller Shares a Special Connection to EBONY

The cover reveal also carries personal meaning for Miller. She chose EBONY as the place to reveal the cover because of her late mother.

Miller recalled growing up with EBONY and JET magazines on her family’s coffee table. She said EBONY was her mother’s favorite publication.

Because of that connection, the exclusive reveal became an emotional moment for the author. Miller said she wished she could send the news to her mother.

She imagined her mother seeing the achievement and calling it “epic.” That memory gives the cover reveal another layer beyond the book itself.

The Disgruntled Black Ladies Book Club Arrives in May 2027

The Disgruntled Black Ladies Book Club is scheduled to arrive on May 25, 2027. Kensington Books is publishing the novel.

The story brings together themes of Black women’s friendship, personal growth, family pressure, careers, relationships, and emotional honesty.

Miller’s new book also offers a familiar setting for readers who understand the value of a trusted circle. A simple book club becomes a place where three women can speak openly.

Most importantly, the novel places Black women at the center of their own conversations. Readers will have to wait until May 2027 to see how those conversations unfold.
