The NAACP is making its biggest-ever investment in a midterm election campaign. The historic $20 million initiative aims to mobilize millions of Black voters ahead of the 2026 elections following recent changes to federal voting rights protections.
The nonpartisan civil rights organization announced that the funding will support its Get Out The Vote campaign before November’s midterms. The effort comes months after the U.S. Supreme Court’s April ruling that weakened the Voting Rights Act’s ability to challenge racial gerrymandering.
NAACP Plans to Reach 6.5 Million Black Voters Across Key States
The campaign is designed to mobilize 6.5 million Black voters in 14 states and 33 congressional districts. To expand its reach, the NAACP has partnered with GSSA to strengthen voter outreach in communities where turnout could shape election results.
The $20 million investment will fund grassroots organizing, digital and traditional advertising, voter education, and the recruitment of 20,000 volunteers. The organization also wants to help eligible voters register, create voting plans, and participate in this year’s midterm elections.
According to the NAACP, the campaign responds to growing concerns about voting access, civic participation, and policy changes affecting Black communities.
NAACP Says Voting Rights Remain a Top Priority
NAACP leaders say the campaign is about more than increasing turnout. They believe it is also an opportunity to protect voting rights and encourage civic engagement during a critical election year.
Dominik Whitehead, the organization’s Chief of Field, Membership Growth and Unit Sustainability, said the nation’s 250th anniversary should inspire people to strengthen democracy.
“At a time when voting rights, civil liberties, immigrant communities, and historically marginalized communities continue to face attacks, this anniversary marks an opportunity to come together and fight for a future that serves all people — a future rooted in justice, democracy, dignity, and our shared humanity.”
Whitehead also criticized several policies under President Donald Trump’s administration, arguing that the upcoming election offers voters an opportunity to influence the country’s direction through the democratic process.
Derrick Johnson Highlights the Importance of the 2026 Midterm Elections
NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said the organization hopes to help elect leaders who will protect the rights and interests of everyday Americans.
He encouraged voters to participate in the election and emphasized issues such as healthcare, affordable housing, and education.
“By turning out the vote, we can all help put an end to Donald Trump’s assaults on our communities and the rights we’ve secured through immense struggle, and begin to build a future that actually serves our needs — from having accessible healthcare, affordable housing, and getting a good education.”
Johnson also argued that government policies should focus on improving the lives of working families rather than benefiting only the wealthiest Americans.
Black Voter Mobilization Could Shape the Midterm Elections
The NAACP’s investment reflects the growing importance of Black voter participation in closely contested elections. Many congressional, gubernatorial, and state legislative races are expected to be highly competitive this November.
Other advocacy groups are also preparing major voter engagement efforts ahead of Election Day. Political observers believe the results could influence national policy for years to come.
As the campaign moves forward, the NAACP says its focus remains on encouraging civic participation, expanding voter education, and ensuring Black communities have the information and support needed to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
