Amber Mayfield Hewett started with a simple idea almost a decade ago. She wanted to bring strangers together around food while creating opportunities for Black chefs to shine. Today, that passion project has evolved into an award-winning event business serving major brands like Pepsi, Peloton, and Spotify.
The entrepreneur, author, and event planner says she never expected her supper club, To Be Hosted, to become the foundation of a thriving business. Yet her journey shows how passion, community, and intentional storytelling can open unexpected doors.
How To Be Hosted Grew From a Supper Club Into a Successful Event Business
Mayfield Hewett launched To Be Hosted because it combined the things she loved most: food, parties, community, and meaningful work. She wanted to create safe spaces where people could connect and enjoy shared experiences.
“When I thought about the things I loved (food and parties), the things I needed (passion-driven work and safe spaces), and the things I wanted out of this life (community and enjoyment), all signs pointed toward creating my own supper club,” she wrote in her book, Your Turn to Host: A Guide to Great Parties and Gatherings.
As the supper club grew, so did her reputation for creating memorable experiences. Soon, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, and household brands were seeking her expertise. What started as intimate dinners eventually became a full-scale event planning company with an impressive client list.
Amber Mayfield Hewett Used Social Media to Build Her Brand and Reach New Clients
Mayfield Hewett believes social media should inspire or help people. That simple approach has shaped how she shares her work online and connects with potential clients.
She says trust, taste, and storytelling guide her content strategy. Instead of chasing every trend, she focuses on creating content that serves a clear purpose. This intentional approach has helped her attract the right audience and grow steadily.
The entrepreneur also takes a thoughtful approach to partnerships. She only works with brands she genuinely uses and enjoys. According to her, authenticity makes those collaborations feel natural and credible to her followers.
Pinterest Became a Powerful Tool for Discovery and Business Growth
Pinterest has played a major role in Mayfield Hewett’s success. She had long used the platform for event inspiration when an email from Pinterest arrived in 2020.
Her first collaboration involved creating content for a Juneteenth campaign. Shortly afterward, she worked on a creator event focused on Pinterest-inspired wedding trends. The partnership continued to grow as different Pinterest teams hired To Be Hosted to plan and execute events.
“When I started my business, Pinterest was on my dream client list, so I’m always grateful and excited each time we get to work together,” she said.
She also credits Pinterest’s Creator Program with helping her strengthen her content and increase visibility. Photos from her dinner parties continue to inspire users on the platform and often introduce potential clients to her work.
Beyond Event Planning, Amber Mayfield Hewett Is Teaching Others How to Host
Mayfield Hewett has expanded her business beyond event planning. She created While Entertaining, an indie magazine that later became a Substack newsletter with more than 3,000 subscribers. The platform shares ideas about hosting, gathering, and living more intentionally.
She also launched Soirée School, a social media series that teaches people how to host events like professionals. The series was nominated for a Webby Award earlier this year, a recognition she says confirmed the power of creating educational and useful content.
For the launch of her new book, Your Turn to Host, Mayfield Hewett once again turned to Pinterest. She created a dedicated board for the book and plans to use Pinterest advertisements to reach readers interested in entertaining and gathering.
Throughout her journey, one principle has remained constant.
“I don’t chase every trend, and I don’t post every day. Instead, I consistently share content that solves a specific problem or fills a specific need.”
That steady and intentional approach has helped transform a community supper club into an award-winning business and established Amber Mayfield Hewett as one of today’s most respected voices in hospitality and event planning.
