Representation in dentistry continues to grow, and Dr. Silvia Bautista Morrobel is helping lead that change. The Dominican American dentist, who is the daughter of immigrants, has officially become the full owner of an Aspen Dental practice where she once worked as an associate doctor. Her journey, which moved from employee to owner, is now inspiring many young women, especially Black and Brown girls who rarely see themselves represented in the dental field.
Her story matters even more because Black professionals remain underrepresented in dentistry. Although Black people make up about 12.4 percent of the United States population, only about 3.8 percent of dentists are Black. The percentage of Black women in the profession is even smaller. Against that backdrop, Morrobel’s rise stands as a powerful example of leadership, persistence, and purpose.
Black Women in Dentistry Continue to Break Barriers
Dr. Silvia Bautista Morrobel is among the growing number of Black women changing what leadership looks like in healthcare. Through her work, she has focused on building a welcoming environment for patients from Black and Brown communities, especially those who may carry fear or trauma related to dental care.
Over the years, Morrobel has made it clear that her mission goes beyond treating teeth. She has carefully built a team of 10 employees who share her vision of making patients feel heard, respected, and safe. Her leadership style has become part of what makes her practice stand out in a competitive healthcare space.
A Braces Appointment at 13 Sparked Her Dental Dream
Long before becoming a practice owner, Morrobel knew she wanted to work in dentistry. At just 13 years old, she received braces at the Marquette University School of Dentistry. The care and attention she received during that experience left a lasting mark on her.
That moment became the turning point in her life. From then on, she decided she wanted to become an orthodontist. To pursue that goal, she earned a full scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where she studied Biology Pre-Dentistry and Spanish while also minoring in Chemistry.
Returning to the Same Dental School That Inspired Her
Nine years after receiving treatment as a teenager, Morrobel returned to the same institution that first shaped her dream. At 21, after completing her undergraduate studies, she was accepted into the Marquette University School of Dentistry.
Speaking about that moment, she said:
“It was almost unreal.”
In 2017, she graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Soon after, she joined Aspen Dental in Brookfield, Wisconsin, as an associate doctor, taking her first major step into professional dentistry.
From Associate Doctor to Aspen Dental Owner
Although her career was moving forward, Morrobel’s path was not without challenges. In 2018, she left the practice after becoming pregnant with twins. She later worked at five different dental clinics, hoping to find the right fit. However, none of those workplaces gave her the sense of purpose she was looking for.
As a result, she returned to Aspen Dental in 2020, this time as a lead doctor. Her leadership quickly gained recognition. Within three years, she became a 50 percent owner. Then in 2025, she completed her journey by becoming the full owner of the practice.
“Leadership is not easy. I had to learn how to lead,” she said.
Building a Safe Dental Space for Black and Brown Families
Today, Morrobel is using her position to create something bigger than a successful business. She is building a dental practice where patients from underrepresented communities feel understood and respected.
“I am very proud of where I am in life, and I love that my patients can relate to me,” she said.
On her professional profile, Morrobel also explained her approach to care, saying her work goes beyond clinical expertise. She noted that she remains committed to learning the latest advancements in dentistry and applying the best practices to improve patient care.
