Youngest PhD Graduate at University of Houston Sets Academic Record
Salenah Cartier officially became the youngest PhD graduate at the University of Houston at age 23. University records confirm that no other graduate since 2007 has achieved this milestone at a younger age.
After receiving her Doctor of Education degree, she took the stage during graduation on May 13. The moment marked the latest step in a long academic journey that began years earlier when she first stood out as an exceptional student.
Her achievement has drawn attention because most young adults are only finishing undergraduate studies at this stage of life. Cartier, however, has already completed a doctorate.
Early Academic Journey and Bachelor’s Degree at Age 17
The academic rise of Salenah Cartier began early. In 2020, she made headlines when she became the youngest graduate of the University of Houston at just 17 years old.
At that time, she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Her early success set the foundation for her future studies and research in education.
Her mother, Quailly Cartier, described her as exceptional and disciplined. She said, “She is exceptional. I know that she likes to make me proud.”
Homeschooling, Hard Work, and Early College Success
Salenah Cartier followed a unique academic path from a young age. After sixth grade, she transitioned to full-time homeschooling. Before that, she had attended public schools where she often stood out academically.
She later graduated high school at just 14 years old and quickly moved into college-level studies. She also enrolled in dual credit courses at Lone Star College-Kingwood while preparing for university education.
To support her studies, she even sold used textbooks online. This showed her determination to continue her education despite financial challenges.
Master’s Degree, Doctorate, and Education Research Goals
At 18, Salenah Cartier earned her master’s degree in education. She continued her academic journey with a strong focus on research and social impact.
Her doctoral work centered on education, curriculum development, and student wellbeing. She also worked on bullying research, which she described as deeply personal.
“I am currently working on bullying research, which is very personal. I want other young students to know they can make it through, too,” she said.
Vision to Transform Education for Underserved Communities
Beyond her academic success, Salenah Cartier has a clear mission. She aims to improve education systems and support disadvantaged children through research and policy.
She believes education and technology can unlock hidden potential in underserved communities. Her goal is to become an educator, researcher, and policymaker.
She explained, “Education is the foundation of society, and I wholeheartedly believe that empowering underserved communities through education and technology, we can unlock a bucket of potential in those spaces.”
Family Support and Inspirational Message to Young People
Support from family played a major role in her journey. Her mother expressed pride in her achievements and dedication.
In an emotional reflection, Cartier also encouraged young people to pursue their goals without waiting for perfect timing. She shared that writing down goals and working consistently helped her achieve her dreams.
“I’m so grateful that I stayed in Houston, and so grateful that my mentors and advisors supported me,” she said. “When you set a plan, and you actually work towards that, you can achieve anything.”
