Lekeshi Wormley Recognized Nationally for Teaching Excellence and Student Impact
Lekeshi Wormley has been named a 2026 Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award winner, earning national recognition for her work in the classroom. She also received a $10,000 prize for her outstanding contribution to student success.
The award places her among only 10 educators selected nationwide out of more than 8,000 teachers within the KIPP network. The honor highlights her strong impact on student learning and academic achievement at KIPP Jacksonville Public Schools.
Her recognition came during a surprise celebration held at her school during Teacher Appreciation Week. School leaders, colleagues, and students gathered to honor her dedication and results in science education.
Record Breaking Biology Results at KIPP Bold City High School
Wormley’s teaching has led to major academic improvement in her classroom. During the 2024 to 2025 school year, 71 percent of her students passed Florida’s end-of-course biology exam, the highest pass rate in the school’s history.
This performance also exceeded the statewide average for 10th grade biology by 11 percentage points. Her results reflect consistent effort in improving student understanding and building strong academic foundations.
School leaders say her approach combines structure, care, and high expectations. As a result, students have shown stronger confidence and better performance in science subjects.
Leadership in Science Education and Student Career Growth
Beyond classroom teaching, Wormley serves as Science Department Chair. In this role, she helps guide curriculum planning and supports other science teachers in delivering effective lessons.
She also leads the school’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter. Through this program, she connects students with health science career pathways and professional opportunities.
Her work has helped students gain exposure to postsecondary education and career options in healthcare. Many students have been guided toward future academic and professional success through her mentorship.
Journey From Science Lab to Inspiring Classroom Educator
Wormley’s path into teaching began in Clinton, South Carolina. She once worked in a genetics lab before deciding to explore other career options.
After trying different jobs, she entered an alternative teaching program. She later spent two years as a substitute teacher, where she discovered her passion for working with students.
She shared, “I found myself falling in love with teaching students and being in the classroom.” That experience shaped her commitment to education and student growth.
Recognition for Dedication to Student Success and Education
School leadership praised Wormley for her commitment to student achievement and opportunity building. Zac West, Chief Operating Officer of KIPP Jacksonville Public Schools, said she represents the best of teaching excellence and student support.
He added that her work continues to open doors for students and prepare them for future success in science and health fields. Her impact extends beyond academics into mentorship and leadership development.
Wormley also describes teaching as a calling. She said it allows her to combine science and her passion for working with young people, making education both meaningful and personal.
