Just one day after Mother’s Day, Sheinelle Jones is celebrating a deeply personal milestone that has touched mothers across generations. The TODAY co-host recently reached No. 1 on The New York Times Advice, How To and Miscellaneous bestseller list with her new book, Through Mom’s Eyes: Simple Wisdom From Mothers Who Raised Extraordinary Humans. For Jones, the achievement is more than a career win. It represents years of listening, learning, parenting, and finding strength through grief.

At a time when many families are reflecting on motherhood, Jones’ story is standing out for its honesty and heart. While balancing a national television career, raising three children, and grieving the death of her husband, she turned powerful conversations with mothers of world famous stars into a book now inspiring families everywhere.

Sheinelle Jones Turned a Simple Parenting Question Into a Bestselling Book

The idea for the book did not begin with publishing dreams. Instead, it began with a personal question. Years ago, while still finding her place on TODAY, Jones was mentoring a young NBC page when she was asked what passion project she would pursue if given the chance.

That question led her to a powerful answer. Jones realized she wanted to sit with the mothers behind some of the world’s most admired stars. She wanted to understand their parenting journeys, their mistakes, their victories, and the lessons that shaped extraordinary children.

“Honestly, I would love to interview the mothers of some of these folks that we admire,” Jones said. “You don’t hear from them about just how they did it.”

Celebrity Moms Helped Shape the Vision Behind Through Mom’s Eyes

One of Jones’ first interviews was with Sonya Curry, the mother of Stephen Curry. Jones traveled to Curry’s home, expecting a conversation about parenting. What she found was something much deeper.

During their time together, Curry showed Jones her son’s childhood bedroom filled with trophies, posters, and reminders of dreams that once seemed far away. The moment left a lasting impression on Jones, especially when she realized that young Steph had eventually competed against the very athletes whose posters once covered his walls.

“Before there were vision boards, we had high school bedrooms with posters,” Jones shared. “I did the same thing. I had news people on my wall.”

Over time, Jones also sat with mothers connected to stars like Kevin Durant, Lady Gaga, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. As the interviews continued, she noticed recurring themes of faith, sacrifice, resilience, and quiet strength.

Grief, Motherhood, and Finding Strength After Personal Loss

This year’s Mother’s Day carries a different meaning for Jones. In May 2025, her husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away after battling brain cancer. Months later, her grandmother also passed, leaving Jones and her family to navigate multiple layers of grief.

Now raising three teenagers who are grieving alongside her, Jones says their family is learning how to carry heartbreak while still moving forward.

“What I know to be true is they’re doing what I’m doing,” she said. “We’re holding our heartbreak, but we’re also trying to honor him by moving forward.”

Although she appears polished and composed on television, Jones has been open about the emotional cost of loss.

“I look like I’m operating with a full tank,” she admitted. “But I’m heartbroken.”

Through Mom’s Eyes Became a Love Letter to Her Children

Jones dedicated the book to her children, making the project deeply personal. During the book’s launch, her children surprised her live on TODAY, creating one of the most emotional moments of her journey.

Seeing their faces made the moment real. For Jones, it was proof that her children understood not only the success of the book but also the sacrifice and love behind it.

“I saw their faces, and I thought, OK, they get it,” Jones said. “They were proud of me, and that just moved me to tears.”

She says her goal as a mother is to model the same values she hopes her children will carry into adulthood, including kindness, faith, resilience, and curiosity.

Building a Brand Beyond Television and Journalism

What started as a digital interview series on TODAY in 2018 eventually grew into something much bigger. During the global pandemic, while many people were rethinking their priorities, Jones began imagining how those conversations could become a book.

Now, with a No. 1 bestseller, Jones says she is beginning to see herself differently. She is no longer just a journalist or television host. She is also an author, a storyteller, and a businesswoman learning the value of ownership.

“We can all take a piece of it and try to figure out how we can be our own best advocate and brand,” Jones said.

As she enters this new season of life, Jones says she is embracing change instead of running from it.

“I’m getting to know the new me,” she said. “Al Roker calls it Sheinelle 2.0.”
