Kayla McClellan was once an eighth grade student at Lincoln College Preparatory Academy Middle School in Missouri. During that time, she admits she was not focused on academics. Her attention was more on social life than schoolwork, and her grades suffered as a result.
Eventually, her behavior and academic performance led to her being expelled from school. Looking back, she is honest about that period in her life and what went wrong.
“I was there to socialize, have a good time,” she shared. “My grades were not cutting it and my behavior was all over the place.”
That moment became a turning point. It forced her to step away from her environment and begin a new path in a different school system.

After her expulsion, McClellan enrolled in a local charter school where she continued her education. Although she was intelligent, she still struggled with motivation and did not always see herself as a strong student.

“It just changed the trajectory of my life,” she said, reflecting on her time in college. That experience helped her rebuild her identity and believe in new possibilities.
She later earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 2015 and went on to complete a graduate degree in history from Mississippi State University.

After college, McClellan entered education through Teach For America, a program that places graduates in underserved schools. In 2020, she made a powerful decision to return to her hometown of Kansas City.
Even more emotional, she returned to the same school where she was once expelled. However, this time, she returned as an educator, not a student.

“I’ll meet a kid and I’ll be like, ‘You’re an athlete, you value sports,’ and that’s how I push you and move you,” she explained.

By 2023, McClellan advanced in her career and became an athletic director at Lincoln College Preparatory Academy High School. In this role, she now leads programs that support student athletes and school development.
