Oprah Winfrey Surprises Morehouse Scholars at Atlanta Pre Graduation Dinner

Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at Morehouse College in Atlanta during a pre graduation dinner for students in her scholarship program. The visit took place at the Atlanta University Center on April 24, where soon to graduate students gathered to celebrate the end of their academic journey.

The students are part of the Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholars Program, which has supported Morehouse College for decades. Many of them had no idea she would be attending the event. Her arrival turned a normal dinner into a moment they will likely remember for life.

“Auntie O” Returns to Meet the Students She Helped Support

At Morehouse, many of the scholarship recipients affectionately call Oprah “Auntie O.” The name reflects how close they feel to her support, even though she is a global media icon and billionaire businesswoman.

During the dinner, Oprah joked with the students in a lighthearted way. “They don’t know that I’m here to check on those grades,” she said, which immediately brought laughter to the room. The moment helped set a warm tone for the emotional evening.

The students also had a chance to speak directly to her. Many shared how the scholarship changed their lives, allowing them to focus on school without the heavy burden of financial stress.

Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Impact on Morehouse Students Since 1989

The Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholars Program began in 1989 and has supported about 800 Morehouse College graduates so far. Each student receives around $25,000 per year to help cover tuition, housing, fees, and other school costs.

Over the years, the program has become one of the most impactful private scholarship efforts at the institution. It continues to shape generations of Morehouse men who go on to build careers in different fields.

One graduating student, Marcellis McQueen, described the surprise as overwhelming. “I thought it was a joke at first,” he said. “You just see her coming from the back and I was in utter shock.”

Oprah Reflects on Education as Her “Safest Investment”

Oprah Winfrey also used the moment to reflect on why she continues to invest in education. She explained that the scholarship program started early in her career when she divided her earnings into different financial “buckets.”

According to Oprah, supporting students was never a risky decision. Instead, she called it her “safest investment,” because it directly changes lives and communities.

She told the students, “Each one of the students from the very first class in 1989 to today are the best investment I or anyone could make.”

Students Share Emotional Moments With Oprah at Morehouse Dinner

The dinner became more emotional as students gave speeches about their journeys. Many spoke about how the program helped them stay in school and believe in their future.

Some students were visibly emotional as they addressed Oprah directly. They thanked her not only for financial support but also for believing in them at a critical stage in their lives.

Oprah also responded with pride, saying, “You all have already made the return on the investment for me.”

Oprah Winfrey Celebrates HBCU Legacy and Student Success

As an HBCU alumna from Tennessee State University, Oprah emphasized her connection to historically Black colleges and universities. She spoke about the importance of education and honoring the dreams of past generations.

She also highlighted that the success of the students represents more than personal achievement. It reflects the support of families, communities, and mentors who believed in them.

In her words, the students are not just graduates. They are proof that long term investment in education creates lasting change.
