Symone Sanders Townsend to Lead Spelman 2026 Commencement Keynote Speech

Spelman College has named Symone Sanders Townsend as the keynote speaker for its 139th commencement ceremony. The event is scheduled for May 17, 2026, at the Georgia International Convention Center.

Sanders Townsend is a political strategist and MS Now host. She currently co-anchors “The Weeknight.” She will also receive an honorary doctorate of laws during the ceremony. The college made the announcement on April 21, 2026.

Spelman Honors Symone Sanders Townsend With Honorary Doctorate

During the graduation ceremony, Spelman College will award Sanders Townsend an honorary doctorate of laws. The recognition highlights her work in political communication and public service.

She has built a strong career in U.S. politics. She was the youngest presidential press secretary during Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign. Later, she served as a senior advisor to President Joe Biden. She also worked as chief spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Seven Spelman Valedictorians Set New Academic Milestone

Spelman College has confirmed that seven students will share the title of valedictorian for the Class of 2026. This is described as a rare academic milestone by the institution.

All seven valedictorians are part of the graduating class of 569 students. The graduation weekend will include several ceremonies and events. It will conclude with a baccalaureate service led by the Rev. Dr. Gina M. Stewart.

Leadership Recognition at Spelman 2026 Graduation Ceremony

Spelman’s Interim President Rosalind “Roz” Brewer described Sanders Townsend as a “21st-century Renaissance woman.” She said her career reflects leadership, strategy, and entrepreneurship.

Brewer also highlighted the importance of honoring impactful Black women during the ceremony. Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, former CEO of Feeding America, will also be honored with the National Community Service Award. The leadership lineup reflects Spelman’s focus on influence and service.
