Historic NASCAR ARCA Debut Marks a Breakthrough for Black Women in Racing
History is about to be made as Dystany Spurlock prepares to compete in the ARCA Menards Series East season opener on March 28. At 33, she is set to become the first Black woman to race in the ARCA Menards Series, a major stepping stone within the world of NASCAR.
This milestone moment is more than just a personal achievement—it represents a powerful shift in a sport that has historically lacked diversity. As more eyes turn toward the season opener, Spurlock’s debut signals growing opportunities for Black women in motorsports. Her presence on the track is expected to inspire a new generation of racers who have long been underrepresented.
From Motorcycle Drag Racing to NASCAR’s Developmental Stage
Before stepping into stock car racing, Spurlock built her reputation in motorcycle drag racing, where she has competed since 2017. She also manages her own team within the National Hot Rod Association, an accomplishment she once described as beyond her “wildest dreams.” This strong foundation has helped her develop the discipline and technical skill needed to transition into NASCAR’s competitive environment.
Now, she is taking that experience to the next level by joining MBM Motorsports, where she will drive the No. 66 Ford Mustang. The move highlights her determination to grow as a driver while learning the nuances of stock car racing, including strategy, endurance, and racecraft.
Hickory Motor Speedway: A Proving Ground for NASCAR Stars
The race will take place at Hickory Motor Speedway, a historic venue often referred to as the “Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars.” Located in Hickory, the track has long served as a launchpad for drivers aiming to reach the top levels of NASCAR.
Because of its reputation, the venue adds even more weight to Spurlock’s debut. Competing at such a respected track gives her the chance to prove her skills in front of seasoned fans and industry insiders. At the same time, it places her in the same environment where many racing legends began their journeys.
‘I’m Here, and I’m Ready’: Spurlock Speaks on Her NASCAR Dream
Spurlock has made it clear that this moment is deeply personal. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “This moment means everything to me. Since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of racing in NASCAR. I’ve worked so hard for this… but now I’m really here, and I’m ready.”
Her words capture years of persistence and resilience. Like many athletes breaking barriers, she faced missed opportunities and setbacks along the way. However, her determination never wavered, and now she stands on the brink of making history while aiming to one day reach NASCAR’s top Cup Series.
‘Driven by Dystany’: Documenting the Road to NASCAR
In addition to racing, Spurlock is sharing her journey through a docuseries titled Driven by Dystany: The Road to NASCAR, available on YouTube. The series offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at her transition from motorcycle racing to stock cars, highlighting both the challenges and victories along the way.
This storytelling approach not only builds her personal brand but also brings visibility to the realities of entering professional racing. By documenting her path, Spurlock is helping others understand what it takes to break into the sport—while motivating young women, especially Black women, to pursue their dreams fearlessly.
