Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are expanding their storytelling empire into the world of Broadway. Through their media company, Higher Ground Productions, the couple will co-produce a revival of the award-winning stage play Proof.

The production marks the company’s first venture into Broadway theater, adding another milestone to the Obamas’ growing presence in the entertainment industry. After building a strong reputation in film, television, and podcasting, Higher Ground is now stepping onto one of the most respected stages in the world.

This move signals the couple’s continued commitment to telling meaningful stories that explore complex human experiences while also supporting powerful creative voices.

Higher Ground Productions Expands Into Broadway Theater

Founded in 2018 by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, Higher Ground Productions was created to produce stories that inspire, educate, and spark thoughtful conversations. Over the years, the company has built a strong reputation in Hollywood through award-winning documentaries and scripted programming.

Now, the production company is expanding into theater with its first Broadway project. By backing the revival of Proof, Higher Ground is entering a new creative space while continuing its mission of sharing powerful narratives.

The Obamas expressed their excitement about the project in a statement, emphasizing the importance of stories that explore deep human questions and emotional struggles.

“To bring this landmark play back to Broadway with Ayo, Don, Tommy, and Mike at the helm is an extraordinary privilege,” the couple said. “Proof is exactly the kind of story Higher Ground was built to champion.”

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Play ‘Proof’ Returns to Broadway

Originally written by playwright David Auburn, Proof first premiered in 2000 and quickly became one of the most celebrated plays of its time. The production earned the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and later won a Tony Award for Best Play, solidifying its place as a modern theater classic.

The story centers on a young woman who struggles to understand her own identity while dealing with the complicated legacy of her brilliant but troubled mathematician father. Through themes of intelligence, family, and self-doubt, the play explores questions about talent, inheritance, and personal confidence.

Because of these powerful themes, the play continues to resonate with audiences more than two decades after its original debut.

Star-Studded Cast Brings New Energy to the Revival

The Broadway revival of Proof will feature an impressive cast led by Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri and Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle. Edebiri will portray the central character Catherine, while Cheadle will play her father, Robert.

Although both actors are widely known for their film and television work, the production will mark their official Broadway debuts. Their involvement has already generated excitement among theater fans and entertainment industry watchers.

The cast will also include Samira Wiley and Jin Ha, bringing together a dynamic group of performers from across television, film, and theater.

Tony-Winning Director Leads the New Production

Guiding the revival will be Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail, best known for his groundbreaking work on the hit Broadway musical Hamilton. Kail’s experience with powerful storytelling and dynamic stage direction makes him a fitting leader for the highly anticipated production.

Preview performances are scheduled to begin March 31 at the Booth Theatre in New York City, with opening night planned for April 16. Producers have announced that the show will run for a limited 16-week engagement.

With an acclaimed director, talented cast, and the backing of Higher Ground Productions, the revival aims to introduce the beloved play to a new generation of theater audiences.

The Obamas Continue Building a Powerful Entertainment Legacy

The Broadway project represents another step forward for Higher Ground Productions as it continues to grow its influence in the entertainment industry. Since launching the company, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have produced several critically acclaimed projects.

One of their most notable achievements includes the Academy Award-winning documentary American Factory, which earned an Oscar and brought global attention to the company’s storytelling approach.

By entering the Broadway space with Proof, the Obamas are once again demonstrating their commitment to meaningful storytelling that sparks discussion and highlights the complexities of the human experience.
