The 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations have been announced, and this year, legendary Black women artists are taking center stage. Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, and Sade lead a list of diverse nominees, marking a historic moment for women in music and Black artists in particular.
Historic Nominations Highlight Black Women in Music
This year’s nominations recognize the groundbreaking contributions of Black women to the music industry. Lauryn Hill, whose Miseducation of Lauryn Hill became the first hip-hop album to win Album of the Year in 1999, joins fellow trailblazers Mariah Carey and Sade.
Mariah Carey boasts 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been a staple in the Hall of Fame conversation, following nominations in 2024 and 2025. Sade, known for her soulful hits like “Smooth Operator” and “The Sweetest Taboo,” returns as a nominee, further cementing her legendary status.
“This diverse list of talented nominees recognizes the ever-evolving faces and sounds of Rock & Roll and its continued impact on youth culture,” said John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.
A Star-Studded List Across Genres
The 2026 list features 17 performers spanning multiple genres, including R&B, hip-hop, rock, pop, metal, and blues. Other nominees include Phil Collins, INXS, Iron Maiden, Luther Vandross, Shakira, Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley, Pink, New Edition, and the Wu-Tang Clan.

The Hall of Fame requires artists to have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years ago. A voting body of over 1,200 artists, historians, and industry professionals will select the 2026 inductees. The final class, including honorees in special categories like Musical Influence and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award, will be revealed in April.
