The NAACP has launched a new national initiative designed to address racial inequities in healthcare through the responsible use of artificial intelligence. The program, called ACE Your Health, was developed in partnership with global pharmaceutical company Sanofi and centers Black and Brown communities in the future of health technology.

The initiative introduces an equity-first, human-centered framework for how AI should be designed, deployed, and governed within healthcare systems. NAACP leaders say the goal is not just innovation, but accountability.

ACE Your Health Focuses on Equity in AI-Driven Healthcare

ACE Your Health aims to improve how AI supports disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in underserved communities. According to the NAACP, current AI systems often rely on biased or incomplete data, which can exclude Black and Brown patients from quality care.

In a white paper outlining the initiative, the organization emphasized that AI must reflect the real experiences of the people it serves. The framework calls for inclusive data collection, especially as diverse participation in clinical trials remains limited.

The initiative also expands AI’s role beyond efficiency. It positions technology as a tool for correcting long-standing structural gaps in medicine.

NAACP Leaders Warn Against Biased Medical AI Systems

Dr. Chris Pernell, director of the NAACP Center for Health Equity, stressed that equity must be built into AI from the start.

“When Black, Brown, and underserved patients are missing from the data, they are missing from the solutions,” Pernell said. “Health AI must be built with dignity, transparency, and centered on the communities it’s meant to benefit.”

She noted that systems created without community input often worsen disparities. The initiative directly responds to those risks by requiring ethical oversight and fairness metrics.

Addressing the Growing ‘AI Divide’ in Healthcare

While AI offers new possibilities, the NAACP acknowledged growing concerns about an “AI divide” in medicine. This divide often results from unequal access, biased datasets, and limited community oversight.

To counter these issues, ACE Your Health will introduce equity impact assessments across healthcare AI tools. These assessments will measure fairness and guide ethical implementation as technology becomes more widespread.

The initiative also includes accountability standards to ensure AI systems do not reinforce discrimination in care delivery.

AI Literacy and Community Engagement Remain Central

Community education is a core part of the program. ACE Your Health will promote AI literacy among patients and healthcare providers so they understand how technology influences medical decisions.

Dr. S. Craig Watkins, chair of the ACE Your Health AI Taskforce, emphasized the importance of responsible governance.

“Even as AI promises more personalized healthcare, ethics, safety, and equity must remain the priority,” Watkins said.

The NAACP plans to work with healthcare systems, policymakers, and industry leaders while keeping community voices at the center of decision-making.

Positioning Black and Brown Communities at the Forefront of Innovation

Through ACE Your Health, the NAACP is asserting that technological progress must include those historically excluded from healthcare advancement. The organization says equity is not optional when shaping the future of medicine.

By grounding AI in fairness and lived experience, the initiative seeks to transform healthcare systems without sacrificing trust or humanity.
