The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater opened its 2025–26 season on December 3 with a glamorous and emotional gala at New York City Center. The night carried deep meaning, marking a new moment under Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack and celebrating the powerful legacy of Alvin Ailey. Yet one of the most memorable highlights came when Ciara, serving as Honorary Chair, stepped onstage to deliver a moving speech before introducing the finale of Revelations.

Ciara’s Emotional Speech at the Alvin Ailey Gala

Ciara brought star power and heart to the evening. Wearing a velvet gown with a dramatic thigh-high slit, she stood confidently before a packed theater filled with artists, cultural leaders, and longtime supporters of the company.

Before the beloved finale of Revelations, Ciara shared what the iconic piece means to her and to the world. She called the work “a bridge connecting generations across six continents, touching millions of hearts with its beauty and truth.” Her words drew applause and set a powerful tone for the performance to come.

After her speech, she introduced the finale, which featured a live choir that lifted the room with soulful harmonies. Her role as Honorary Chair placed her at the center of one of the evening’s defining moments.

A Star-Studded Opening Night Filled With Live Performances

The gala opened with a live-music performance of Medhi Walerski’s Blink of an Eye, supported by Grammy-winning violinist Melissa White. This company premiere helped set the tone for the night, blending new artistic energy with Ailey’s rich history.

Later, Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy gave a breathtaking performance of Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You. Her voice filled the theater with emotion and prepared the audience for the most beloved piece in the Ailey repertoire—Revelations.

The finale, accompanied by a full choir, brought the crowd to its feet. The entire evening highlighted why the Alvin Ailey Opening Night Gala remains one of New York’s most anticipated cultural events.

A New Era Under Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack

Alicia Graf Mack, who officially stepped into her role in July, led the evening with grace and authority. She is only the fourth artistic director in Ailey history, following Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, and Robert Battle. Her leadership signals a new chapter grounded in authenticity, imagination, and deep respect for the company’s roots.

Speaking to the audience, she said, “Tonight marks more than an opening night. It is a continuation of a dream that began 67 years ago in the heart and mind of one visionary man: Alvin Ailey.” She also highlighted her vision to uplift diverse movement languages and stories from across the Black diaspora.

The night also honored Daria L. Wallach, chair of the Ailey Board of Trustees, for her long-standing leadership and service.

Community, Culture, and Celebration Continue at the Ziegfeld Ballroom

After the final curtain, the celebration moved to the Ziegfeld Ballroom, where 675 guests gathered for dinner, dancing, and more live music. The guest list included leaders in entertainment, philanthropy, business, and politics. Celebrities such as Bianca Lawson, Phylicia Rashad, Jasmine Guy, Sunny Hostin, LaChanze, Nia Sioux, and Lorraine Toussaint added even more sparkle to the night.

The event raised more than $2.7 million to support new productions, scholarships for The Ailey School, and educational programs that reach children across the United States. These funds ensure that Alvin Ailey’s mission continues to touch lives far beyond the stage.

Looking Ahead: New Works and a Nationwide Tour

Audiences can expect several new premieres in 2026, including:

    • Maija Garcia’s Jazz Island
    • Jamar Roberts’ Song of the Anchorite
    • Frederick Earl Mosley’s Embrace
    • The Holy Blues, developed by Jawole Zollar, Samantha Figgins, and Chalvar Monteiro

Longtime favorites, including Revelations, will also return, with a full choir for opening weekend.

The company will then embark on a national tour, bringing its unmatched artistry to more than 20 cities between January and May 2026.
