Lyle Gittens, 108, and Eleanor Gittens, 107, have officially earned the title of the world’s oldest living married couple. With a combined age of 216 years and 132 days, they represent Black love at its finest. They also hold the Guinness World Record for the oldest living married couple by aggregate age.

LongeviQuest—an organization that verifies and publishes “world’s oldest people rankings”—recently spoke with the couple. They asked about the secret to their eight decades of marriage. Their answers were beautifully simple and profound.

The Simple Secret to Eight Decades of Marriage

“We love each other,” Eleanor said in a November 4 interview with LongeviQuest. Lyle’s response was equally direct and heartfelt. “I love my wife,” he added with conviction.

Their straightforward answers reveal the foundation of their extraordinary longevity together. Love, respect, and commitment have sustained them through more than 80 years of marriage. The couple’s devotion to each other remains as strong today as it was decades ago.

A Love Story That Began at Clark Atlanta University in 1941

The pair’s love story began more than 80 years ago at Clark Atlanta University. They met as students in 1941 when both were pursuing their education. Lyle was a standout basketball player who would later be inducted into the university’s Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

Eleanor fondly remembered watching Lyle play basketball during their college days. It didn’t take long for them to realize they had found something special together. They were married on June 4, 1942, and celebrated their 83rd wedding anniversary earlier this year.

World War II Separation Tested Their Young Marriage

Their journey together was not without significant hardships and challenges. Shortly after their wedding, World War II was underway. Lyle was deployed to Italy with the U.S. Army’s 92nd Infantry Division.

At the time, Eleanor was expecting their first child. She often wondered if she would ever see her husband again. Though they wrote to each other regularly, Lyle’s letters were censored by military mail clerks. The uncertainty and separation tested their bond during the early years of marriage.

Reunited After War to Build a Family in New York City

Fortunately, the couple was reunited after the war ended. They went on to raise three children in New York City together. Their children include son Lyle Rogers and daughters Angela and Ignae.

Both Lyle and Eleanor built successful careers in government service. They took the New York civil service exam and enjoyed working side by side for years. Their professional partnership mirrored the strength of their personal relationship.

Eleanor’s Lifelong Passion for Education Led to Doctorate at 69

Eleanor’s passion for education never faded throughout her long life. At 69 years old, she earned a doctorate in Urban Education from Fordham University. This remarkable achievement demonstrated her commitment to learning and personal growth.

Her educational journey inspired family members and community members alike. Eleanor proved that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and goals. Her dedication to education exemplified the values she and Lyle instilled in their children.

Evening Martinis May Be the Real Secret to Longevity

Eleanor revealed an interesting detail about their daily routine in a February 2022 interview. Speaking with The Westside Gazette, she shared that the couple used to enjoy a martini almost every evening. This ritual may have been their real secret to longevity and happiness.

She also recalled that Lyle was drafted “barely a week after” he proposed to her. The quick transition from engagement to wartime separation made their early marriage particularly challenging. Their ability to weather that storm set the foundation for decades of resilience together.

Guinness World Record Recognizes Their Combined Age Achievement

The Guinness World Record for oldest living married couple by aggregate age is a prestigious honor. The Gittens’ combined age of 216 years and 132 days surpasses all other living married couples. This record celebrates not just longevity but also lasting commitment.

LongeviQuest’s verification process ensures the accuracy of age claims for record holders. The organization maintains comprehensive rankings of the world’s oldest people. Their recognition of the Gittens adds credibility to this remarkable achievement.

A Legacy of Black Love That Inspires Generations

The Gittens represent Black love at its absolute finest and most enduring. Their story spans over eight decades of dedication, partnership, and unwavering support. They’ve witnessed tremendous historical changes while maintaining their bond through it all.

From segregation to civil rights to the digital age, they’ve navigated everything together. Their marriage has outlasted wars, social upheaval, and countless personal challenges. The couple serves as living proof that true love can withstand anything.

Standing as Role Models for Lasting Commitment and Partnership

Lyle and Eleanor Gittens offer a powerful example for younger generations. Their relationship demonstrates that marriage requires work, patience, and genuine affection. They’ve shown that commitment means staying together through good times and bad.

Their story reminds us that the simplest answers are often the truest ones. When asked about their secret, they didn’t cite complex strategies or theories. They simply said they love each other—and that has been enough for 83 years.
