Salt-N-Pepa Make History at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Salt-N-Pepa brought the house down at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, earning the Musical Influence Award — one of music’s highest honors. The trailblazing duo, Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton, were joined by their longtime DJ, Deidra “Spinderella” Roper, marking a powerful reunion and celebration of women in hip-hop.

The induction, which took place at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater and is now streaming on Disney+, was filled with energy, emotion, and empowerment. During their acceptance, Salt-N-Pepa used the moment not only to celebrate their decades-long impact but also to call out unfair practices in the music industry, revealing that their songs had been removed from streaming platforms.

“This is for every woman who picked up a mic when they told her she couldn’t,” Salt declared to a roaring crowd. She added, “We have to keep using our influence until the industry honors creativity with love, respect, and fairness.”

Missy Elliott Honors the Women Who Opened the Doors

Missy Elliott, the first female rapper ever inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023, had the honor of presenting the award. In a powerful and emotional speech, she credited Salt-N-Pepa for laying the foundation that allowed artists like her to thrive.

“The reason you even know Missy Elliott’s name is because of Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella,” she said passionately. “When you see your favorite rapper, remember — these three women are the bricklayers of hip-hop. They gave us their shoulders to stand on.”

Elliott even wore a sparkling jacket inspired by Salt-N-Pepa’s iconic 1980s style, a reminder of their lasting impact on music, fashion, and culture.

Electrifying Performance of Hip-Hop Classics

Before taking the podium, the group performed a high-energy medley of their greatest hits, proving that 40 years later, their music still moves the crowd. They kicked things off with “My Mic Sounds Nice,” followed by “Shoop” and “Let’s Talk About Sex,” complete with bold visuals and dancers that captured the spirit of their fearless lyrics.

DJ Spinderella got her moment to shine with a solo scratch performance before En Vogue joined them onstage for their timeless collaboration “Whatta Man.” Pepa updated her verse to reflect the times, swapping “Arnold” for “Barack,” earning laughs and cheers from fans.

The night ended with a roaring performance of “Push It,” where even Cyndi Lauper was seen dancing in the audience. It was a night that celebrated music, sisterhood, and the kind of bold confidence only Salt-N-Pepa could deliver.

From Platinum Records to Lifetime Achievement

Salt-N-Pepa’s induction is the latest honor in a long line of career-defining moments. The trio made history in the late 1980s and early 1990s as the first female rap group to go gold and platinum, selling over a million copies of their debut album Hot, Cool & Vicious — powered by their breakout hit “Push It.”

They followed with back-to-back chart-toppers like “Shoop,” “Expression,” and their Grammy-winning single “None of Your Business.” Their 1993 album Very Necessary went multi-platinum and remains one of hip-hop’s most successful records by a female group.

Over the years, Salt-N-Pepa have earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2021) and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2022). Now, their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction completes the trifecta of music’s most prestigious honors.

Honoring Legacy, Fighting for Fairness

Despite the celebration, Salt used her acceptance speech to highlight the ongoing fight for ownership and fair treatment in music. She revealed that much of Salt-N-Pepa’s music had been taken off streaming platforms, underscoring the continued challenges artists — especially women — face in controlling their work.

“Fans can’t even stream our music right now,” she said. “Salt-N-Pepa have never been afraid of a fight. We’ll keep using our influence until creativity gets the respect it deserves.”

Pepa added heartfelt gratitude to their fans, saying, “Thank you for keeping us so relevant and alive for 40 years. This moment defines all the hard work we’ve pushed through since the Eighties.”

A Long-Awaited but “Right on Time” Honor

While many fans called this recognition “long overdue,” Salt disagreed. She told Billboard that the moment felt perfectly timed. “You want longevity. You want recognition. Everyone’s acknowledging Salt-N-Pepa’s contribution to music — that’s perfection to me,” she said.

From breaking barriers in hip-hop to changing how women are seen in music, Salt-N-Pepa’s induction is more than a trophy — it’s a reminder of how three women from Queens changed the sound and soul of a generation.
