DJ Spinderella Achieves an Unprecedented Rock & Roll Honor
DJ Spinderella, the legendary Salt-N-Pepa DJ, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025.
The induction ceremony took place at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. This moment marked her as the first female DJ ever recognized by the Hall.
Fans and fellow artists celebrated her career, which spans over four decades of groundbreaking work behind the turntables.
“When I started, it was a rare thing to see a woman behind turntables,” Spinderella said. “It was literally the boys club, so I had to carve my own lane.”
She added, “It was dedication; it was my craft, and I never missed a beat in 40 years… I carry every female DJ who ever dared to dream.”
Salt-N-Pepa Shine on Stage With Classic Hits
During the ceremony, Salt-N-Pepa performed a medley of their iconic songs, including 1987’s Push It and 1993’s Whatta Man.
They were joined on stage by En Vogue, the original collaborators for Whatta Man, adding nostalgia and star power to the moment.
The performance highlighted Salt-N-Pepa’s enduring influence on hip-hop, pop culture, and female empowerment in music.
Missy Elliott also gave a heartfelt speech before the performance, praising the trio for their artistry and legacy. Her tribute set the tone for a night honoring women’s achievements in music.
DJ Legacy and Influence Across Generations
Spinderella, whose real name is Deidra Muriel Roper, has been a pioneer for female DJs. She paved the way in a male-dominated industry.
Previous DJ inductees include DJ Kool Herc (2003) and Grandmaster Flash (2007). Spinderella joins their ranks, representing a new milestone for women in music.
Her career demonstrates persistence, talent, and leadership, inspiring countless women to pursue DJing and music production.
“Every woman who touched a turntable and said, ‘I can do that too,’ this is ours. Respect the DJ,” she told the audience.
Salt-N-Pepa Fight for Artistic Rights
Cheryl “Salt” James addressed a separate but important matter during the ceremony. The group is in a lawsuit against Universal Music Group to regain control of their masters.
James shared that their music has been removed from streaming platforms, despite their legal rights, highlighting challenges Black artists face in the music industry.
She emphasized, “Salt-N-Pepa has never been afraid of a fight,” reinforcing the group’s resilience and advocacy for fair treatment.
The combination of their Hall of Fame induction and ongoing fight for ownership underscores Salt-N-Pepa’s impact both on stage and behind the scenes.
