Anok Yai Recognized as 2025 Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council
Sudanese-American supermodel Anok Yai has been named the 2025 Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council (BFC), weeks ahead of the official British Fashion Awards ceremony. The announcement highlights her continued influence in shaping the direction of modern fashion and redefining global beauty representation.
At just 27 years old, Yai has become one of the most recognized figures in fashion, admired for her poise, artistry, and commanding runway presence. According to the BFC, she was chosen by a private panel of industry experts, including BFC CEO Laura Weir, photographer Campbell Addy, and stylist Carlos Nazario. The panel’s decision underscores Yai’s exceptional consistency, leadership, and creative influence across the fashion industry.
A Viral Moment That Launched a Global Career
Anok Yai’s journey into high fashion began unexpectedly in 2017, when a candid photo of her attending Howard University’s Homecoming went viral. The image caught the attention of modeling agencies and introduced her to a world she never planned to enter. That viral moment quickly evolved into a full-fledged career, as Yai signed with major modeling agencies and began walking for top fashion houses.
Since then, Yai’s career has soared to new heights. In 2025 alone, she opened shows for Ferragamo, Coperni, and Hugo Boss and closed for Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Vetements, and Messika. Her strong presence on runways around the world has earned her a place among the most respected models in the industry.
Shaping the Look of Modern Fashion and Representation
Yai’s work continues to redefine how luxury fashion presents beauty and identity. She has appeared in major campaigns for Mugler’s Alien fragrance, Gap, and the revived Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Her editorial appearances have been equally impactful, gracing the covers of Vogue France, Perfect, and Allure, where she shared a cover with last year’s winner, Alex Consani.
She is also one of only two Black models to ever open a Prada show, following Naomi Campbell, marking a milestone in representation within high-end fashion. Her visibility has paved the way for a broader acceptance of dark-skinned Black women in luxury spaces, an evolution that many in the industry view as long overdue.
A Defining Force in Fashion’s New Era
As the BFC noted in its announcement, “Anok’s impact transcends the runway — from redefining beauty standards to championing artistry and representation on a global stage.” Her influence has made her not only a leading figure in modeling but also a symbol of empowerment and cultural pride for the next generation of Black women entering creative industries.
Yai now joins a distinguished list of past Model of the Year winners, including Bella Hadid, Paloma Elsesser, and Kate Moss, who holds the record with three wins. Her latest recognition places her among fashion’s most influential figures, solidifying her place as a modern icon whose story continues to inspire change and excellence worldwide.
