Michelle Obama embraces her sixties with confidence and purpose
Michelle Obama is stepping boldly into her sixties with a fresh perspective on life, health, and beauty. Ahead of the release of her new style book The Look on November 4, the former First Lady opened up to PEOPLE about aging, self-care, and living on her own terms.
“I tell people, ‘The sixties? Oh, a wonderful time,’” she said. “I feel like this is the first time in my life that when I say and do something—here in this interview, writing this book, rolling it out in this way—these are my choices.”
For Michelle, this new chapter is about independence and joy. She describes it as a season where every move she makes is intentional and deeply personal.
Michelle Obama shares her secret to aging gracefully
When asked about how she maintains her youthful glow, Michelle didn’t hesitate to share her secret. “I’m coloring that gray hair,” she said with a laugh. “I’m not wincing when I see one, but I’m not leaving it there long.”
The former First Lady credits her late mother, Marian Robinson, for the ritual. “My mother dyed her hair until the day she died. She had a beautiful sandy color blonde that mixed in well with the gray. I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to be doing that too,’” she said.
Aside from hair color, Michelle keeps her routine simple. “I really don’t do much else. Fortunately, Black don’t crack, so I’m doing all right,” she added. “But yeah, I will be dyeing my hair until there is no dye in the land.”
Aging strong: Michelle Obama’s commitment to health and wellness
Beyond beauty, Michelle emphasized the importance of staying healthy and active. “My health has always been paramount. What I eat, working out, I go to regular doctor’s visits,” she said.
She takes self-care seriously and doesn’t skip health checks. “I do not miss a mammogram. I do all the things that I’m supposed to do, because I value my health. That allows me to enjoy this time because I’m not achy, I’m not sore, I’m not sick. I’m as vibrant as I’ve ever been.”
Her words reflect the same disciplined approach that made her one of the most admired First Ladies in U.S. history.
Life after the White House: freedom, family, and fulfillment
For Michelle, life after the White House has been a journey of rediscovery. “This is the first time in my life when every decision I make is for me,” she said.
She reflected on how many women spend years making sacrifices for others. “As mothers, as women, as wives, we spend our lives making decisions for everyone else—our kids, our husbands, our families. Now, I’m finally in a space where I can do what feels right for me.”
With her daughters, Sasha (24) and Malia (27), now grown and thriving, Michelle feels a new sense of freedom. “My kids are launched. They are healthy and happy. My husband is doing just fine. We are the former president and first lady—it’s been almost ten years since we’ve been in that job. We are formers,” she said, smiling. “And being formers is freeing.”
Michelle Obama continues to inspire women of every generation
As she enters this new era, Michelle Obama continues to embody grace, wisdom, and empowerment. Her message to women—especially those over sixty—is simple yet powerful: life keeps getting better when you live it on your own terms.
With The Look, she hopes to remind readers that aging isn’t something to hide from—it’s something to own with pride. Her confidence, humor, and authenticity remain her true beauty secrets.
“Every decision I make now is for me,” she said. “And that feels really good.”
