A New Kind of Learning for Florida’s Children

Education in Florida is getting a fresh start thanks to Dr. Kisha Bellande-Francis, a visionary Black educator with over 20 years of experience. She has launched DOTT Academy, a new charter school in Greenacres, Florida, that replaces traditional grades with a competency-based model focused on real-world learning.

The school serves children ages 5 to 14 and allows students to move ahead once they master a skill — not just because they’ve spent a certain amount of time in class. It’s one of the few schools in the state using this approach, designed to help students — especially Black children — learn in ways that truly fit their abilities and interests.

DOTT Academy empowers students through personalized learning where they progress based on mastery, not seat time,” Dr. Bellande-Francis explained. “The result is stronger skills, deeper confidence, and real-world readiness — the ultimate goal of every parent.”

    Empowering Students Through Real-World Skills

At DOTT Academy, education looks different. Instead of memorizing facts or chasing grades, students are taught skills they can use beyond the classroom. They work on projects like building sustainable gardens, organizing community events, and solving real-world challenges that teach teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking.

Dr. Bellande-Francis believes these experiences are what children need most. “We focus on depth over pace, personal growth over comparison, and real readiness over rote performance,” she said. Her mission is to help young learners discover their strengths early — not through test scores, but through problem-solving and creativity.

This kind of learning, she explained, gives students ownership of their education. They become confident, capable, and ready for whatever comes next — from high school to entrepreneurship.

How the DOTT Academy Model Works

The academy groups its students into five “pods” based on development, not age. These pods — Foundations (K–1), Explorers (1–3), Innovators (3–5), Scholars (5–6), and Leaders (6–8) — allow children to work alongside peers of different ages and skill levels.

Each pod helps teachers focus on what every child needs individually. Students aren’t held back or rushed ahead. They advance once they’ve mastered their current goals, and by the time they complete the Leaders Pod, they graduate with a mastery portfolio — a personalized record of achievements that showcases what they can do in the real world.

That portfolio helps students stand out when applying to competitive high schools and programs. It’s also a confidence booster, reminding them how far they’ve come through dedication, curiosity, and resilience.

A Leader Building a New Educational Legacy

Dr. Bellande-Francis is no stranger to transforming classrooms. Before founding DOTT Academy, she worked across 15 states as a teacher, consultant, and personal development expert. Her passion for reimagining education grew from seeing how many talented students were left behind by rigid school systems.

With DOTT Academy, she’s creating a model that puts children’s growth — not grades — at the center of learning. Her work represents a larger movement of Black women leading change in education, making sure every child, especially those from underserved communities, gets the tools to thrive.

As Dr. Bellande-Francis continues shaping the future of Florida’s youth, her message remains simple yet powerful: education should prepare children for life — not just tests.
