Joy-Ann Reid Begins New Chapter with Her Own Media Company
Months after leaving MSNBC, Emmy-nominated journalist Joy-Ann Reid is forging a bold new path. She has officially launched her own production company, Image Lab Media, alongside her husband and business partner.
Her newest venture, The Joy Reid Show, has already made a powerful entrance into the digital space. Hosted on YouTube, the show has gained more than 300,000 subscribers in just a few months. This rapid growth signals the strength of Reid’s influence and her loyal audience.
“We’re meeting people where they are,” she said. “I’m giving you trusted, factual, researched information.”
Building an Independent Media Legacy
Reid’s departure from The ReidOut earlier this year came as a shock to many of her viewers. However, she has transformed what could have been a setback into a strategic move toward independence.
Her production company allows her to take full control of her narrative, platform, and brand. By moving beyond traditional TV, Reid is proving that media power can thrive outside legacy networks. “Rather than using my resources to benefit a corporation, I’m using them to benefit my own company,” she said.
This new phase reflects not just a career pivot, but a personal mission to create space for authentic, unfiltered journalism.
A Powerful Foundation Built by Her Mother
Reid credits her late mother as the force that shaped her worldview. She grew up in a home where the six o’clock news was sacred and global issues mattered. Her mother, a brilliant academic and single mom, earned a PhD while raising three children.
“She just did all the things,” Reid said. “She has always been my inspiration and when she was alive, she was my bestie.”
This foundation of resilience and purpose deeply informs how Reid approaches media and storytelling today.
From Blogger to Political Powerhouse
Reid’s journey to media prominence didn’t start in a newsroom. It began with her blog, The Amateur Pundit, where she shared her sharp political commentary for fun.
Her writing caught the eye of NBC’s Miami affiliate, leading to her first major digital media role. She went on to join Barack Obama 2008 presidential campaign, which catapulted her into the national spotlight. Soon after, she became a familiar face on CNBC and MSNBC.
Her story is a reminder that passion projects can lead to powerful opportunities. “It’s not how many people are reading it,” she said. “It’s who’s reading it.”
Reclaiming Her Voice After The ReidOut
When MSNBC canceled The ReidOut in February, it drew criticism and disappointment from viewers. But for Reid, it became a moment of clarity.
“I can’t imagine having to be at one of these major media companies right now,” she said. “I would be resisting doing what they’re doing, and I’d be fired anyway. So I’m relieved to not have to deal with that.”
Now, with Image Lab Media, she’s free from network politics and focused on telling the truth on her own terms.
Owning Her Brand and Inspiring Others
Reid also shared the importance of building a personal brand while working inside major companies. “It’s really important not just to do your job in media, but to build your brand,” she said.
Even during her network years, she protected her voice and audience. That strategy has made her transition smoother and more powerful. “The brand you’re building at work belongs to you. So if you decide to go out and become your own person, you’re taking your brand along with you.”
Today, she’s leveraging decades of experience to shape a new kind of independent journalism.
A Show That Speaks to the Moment
The Joy Reid Show features in-depth conversations with major voices shaping today’s world. Guests have included Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and Zohran Mamdani.
Her show blends her signature sharp political insight with cultural conversations, making it accessible to a wider audience through platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
“You have to be adaptable if you’re gonna be in the media business,” Reid said. “It keeps changing.”
