MacKenzie Scott delivered another transformative gift to Morgan State University. The philanthropist donated a record-breaking $63 million to the Maryland HBCU. Her total contributions to the institution over five years now reach $103 million.

Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, previously gave $40 million in 2020. That donation set a record at the time for the university. The latest unrestricted gift empowers Morgan State officials with full authority over strategic investments.

Unrestricted Funding Supports Strategic Growth

Scott’s newest donation comes without limitations on how it can be used. Morgan State can allocate funds toward deepening its endowment and supporting student success. The gift also advances the school’s mission as a research institution.

This flexibility allows university leaders to make decisions aligned with institutional priorities. The unrestricted nature demonstrates Scott’s trust in Morgan State’s leadership and vision. Such autonomy rarely accompanies major philanthropic gifts to educational institutions.

Morgan State Pursues Carnegie 1 Research Status

The university is working toward becoming the second HBCU with Carnegie 1 Research designation. This prestigious status recognizes institutions with the highest research activity levels. Scott’s latest gift directly supports this ambitious goal.

Currently, Morgan State stands as the third-largest HBCU in the nation. Achieving Carnegie 1 status would elevate the institution’s reputation significantly. The financial backing accelerates progress toward this transformative milestone for the university.

University President Praises Partnership with Scott

David K. Wilson, Morgan State’s president, expressed gratitude for Scott’s continued support. “MacKenzie Scott’s renewed investment in Morgan is a resounding testament to the work we’ve done to drive transformation,” he stated. The investment extends beyond campus to communities the university serves.

“To receive one historic gift from Ms. Scott was an incredible honor; to receive two speaks volumes,” Wilson added. He emphasized confidence in the institution’s stewardship, leadership, and trajectory. “This is more than philanthropy—it’s a partnership in progress,” the president declared.

Gifts Spark Wave of HBCU Philanthropy

Scott’s donations to Morgan State have inspired broader philanthropic interest in HBCUs. Her gifts sparked a wave of donations toward institutions at the Atlanta University Center. This ripple effect demonstrates how major gifts can catalyze additional support.

The visibility of Scott’s contributions encourages other donors to invest in Black colleges. Her pattern of substantial, unrestricted giving sets a powerful example for philanthropists. This approach has helped shift conversations about supporting HBCUs nationwide.

Building Centers for Health Equity and Education

Scott’s previous funding helped Morgan State establish important research centers. The university built its Center for Urban Health Equity with philanthropic support. The National Center for the Elimination of Educational Disparities also benefited from these investments.

These centers address critical social issues affecting underserved communities. They position Morgan State as a leader in equity-focused research. The infrastructure supports the university’s commitment to driving meaningful change through scholarship.

Launching First Public HBCU Medical School

The latest funding will support Morgan State’s groundbreaking medical school initiative. The institution is creating the first public, nonprofit medical school at an HBCU. This venture represents a major milestone for healthcare education at Black colleges.

Critical financial support keeps the university on track for this historic launch. The medical school will advance healthcare provider equity across underserved regions. It also creates research opportunities for diverse scholars in medical fields.

Advancing Research University Vision Without Compromise

Wilson emphasized that growth won’t compromise the university’s core identity. “Morgan is on an extraordinary journey,” he stated confidently. The investment will accelerate momentum while breaking barriers and advancing equity.

“This investment will allow us to fulfill our vision to become one of the top public research universities in the country,” Wilson explained. However, he stressed an important caveat: achieving excellence “without losing our soul.” Morgan State plans to maintain its historic mission while expanding its impact.
