U.S. Mint Unveils Final Coin in the 2025 American Women Quarters Program
A new coin release is shining a bright light on a sports legend. United States Mint has officially launched the final coin in its 2025 American Women Quarters Program, honoring trailblazing athlete Althea Gibson.
The coin was released on October 20 and marks the fifth and final quarter of the 2025 series. It celebrates Gibson’s extraordinary impact as a world-class tennis player and barrier-breaking figure in sports history. Collectors can pre-order quarters, rolls, and bags through the U.S. Mint’s official website.
“This is a special way to close our program,” said United States Mint Acting Director Kristie McNally. “Althea Gibson’s accomplishments reflect her tenacity and dedication to the pursuit of her dreams.”
Celebrating a Legacy That Transformed Sports
Althea Gibson changed the face of tennis forever. She was the first Black athlete to break the color barrier at the highest level of the sport. By the late 1950s, she had claimed 11 Grand Slam titles, including major wins at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals.
Her achievements on the court opened doors for generations of Black athletes, paving the way for icons who came after her. Beyond tennis, Gibson was also a talented golfer and became one of the first Black women to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association.
The U.S. Mint’s decision to end the American Women Quarters Program with Gibson is a nod to her unmatched influence on American history and culture.
A Fitting Final Tribute to a Trailblazer
The 2025 American Women Quarters Program has celebrated women who changed the course of U.S. history. Gibson’s coin serves as its grand finale.
Her story goes far beyond sports. She grew up in a time of deep racial segregation but rose to become one of the world’s greatest athletes. Her victories were not just personal triumphs—they were national milestones.
“It is fitting that someone so talented in so many areas closes out our program,” McNally shared. “Althea Gibson represents excellence, resilience, and the power to inspire.”
Fans and Collectors Show Excitement
The coin’s release has sparked excitement across the country. Many fans have rushed to secure their pre-orders, expressing pride in seeing Gibson honored this way.
“Ordering now, let’s sell out of Althea’s quarter,” one supporter wrote online. Another added, “Love this!”
For those who admire Gibson’s groundbreaking legacy, the quarter is more than a collectible—it’s a powerful reminder of her enduring impact.
