Kamala Harris Honored With NAACP’s Highest Award
Kamala Harris was awarded the 2025 NAACP Spingarn Medal during a special ceremony in Los Angeles, California. The event took place on September 30, 2025, celebrating Harris for her outstanding leadership and lifelong dedication to justice and public service.
The honor was presented by NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson and Chairman Leon W. Russell, who praised Harris for her trailblazing achievements as the first woman and the first Black American to serve as Vice President of the United States.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Spingarn Medal — an award whose legacy reflects the brilliance, sacrifice, and determination of generations who paved the way for progress,” said Harris during her acceptance speech. “That it comes from the NAACP, one of our nation’s oldest and greatest champions of freedom and equality, makes this honor all the more meaningful.”

The Spingarn Medal is the NAACP’s highest honor, awarded each year to an individual who has made distinguished contributions to justice, equity, and public service. The award carries more than a century of history, celebrating those who have advanced the civil rights movement through courage and dedication.
Past recipients include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, and W.E.B. Du Bois, all of whom left a lasting mark on the pursuit of racial equality and cultural progress. Derrick Johnson called Harris’s recognition “a true privilege,” noting, “Her trailblazing leadership and unwavering commitment to justice embody the very essence of this honor.”
NAACP Celebrates a Trailblazer for Generations to Come
The NAACP’s acknowledgment of Harris extends beyond her political achievements. It recognizes her influence as a global symbol of representation and possibility. Johnson emphasized that Harris’s impact will continue to inspire future generations. “As the first woman and the first Black American to serve as Vice President, her legacy of championing equity will inspire generations to come,” he said. Harris’s Continued Work Beyond the White House
Beyond her vice presidency, Kamala Harris remains active in civic engagement and storytelling. She recently released her new book, “107 Days,” on September 23, 2025, which chronicles key moments of her journey in public service. It is her first book since The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, published in 2019. She has also written Superheroes Are Everywhere, a children’s book, and Smart on Crime, which addressed criminal justice reform.
Harris’s 18-city book tour included a surprise visit to her alma mater, Howard University, underscoring her deep connection to her roots and the institutions that helped shape her path. Her presence at the NAACP event served as both a reflection of her ongoing commitment to justice and a symbol of what continued Black leadership in public life can achieve.
